Hull has been awarded the esteemed City of culture award , is anyone planning to cruise there ?

We used to visit Hull marina several times a year , very lively place never a policeman too far away so you can always ask for directions or help (they are usually found in pairs with a dog) .

The Bars and clubs around the marina were always packed with atmosphere , I remember one Bank holiday around 11:00 am while waiting for the lock gates to open we were given a special ' Hull cultural farewell ' by way of a volley of beer/WKD bottles hurled our way . :)

There are plenty of cultural take-aways too , I walked about 1/2 mile from the marina and found every type of take-away you can imagine, even offered 'business' to take away no less than three times by several young ladies.

Anyway if you are going don't miss Dagger Lane and the sealife centre , its a must :)

IMHO the best bit of all is exhilarating feeling as you cruise under the Humber bridge on the way out, if you make it :)

I was a regular visitor from 1962 to 1968. It was the pits. A grimy Hell smelling of rotting fish and populated by very angry tribal people. Went back in 1990 and couldn't believe the transformation, flashy marina, glossy shopping centres etc etc. Visited again in 2011 and realised that all the razamatz was just a veneer and that the old Hull is still there just below the surface. Centre of culture? Maybe.

The City of Culture thing isn't 'till 2017 so I've got time to build up courage to visit.

It's OK for a couple of days but not exactly a full blown holiday destination.
Very few green areas to walk the dog, just one small park at the back of town.
I like the maritime history of the place, but it definitely has some grotty areas.

The marina's nice, and Kildale Marine chandlery is very good.
I just hope they don't hike the marina fees to cash in, although I'm sure they will.

All those take-aways you saw. Did you see them on the pavement?

I jetted in there (really!) in the mid 90's

I was working in Aberdeen and believe it or not the company flew me down for a week to do an install in the Chemical works (where I grew my second head).

Funnily enough, I'd never been there before and was surprised just how nice it was. Had a soft spot for it ever since; never been back

On the visitor pontoon at Hull Marina and grateful for shore power. It was colder than it looks!

That's my mate's 360, I thought you might like that !
Lights on arch is just the reflection from the LEDs on the fly like what's in engine vents and running round the walk ways.

Yep that pic pretty much sums up the Humber and the colour of the marks you get to wash off when you arrive !!

Whats a dagger lane

huge amount of history, goes back to 1500's

walk down late at night and it has a unique eerie feel to it as your own footsteps stalk you knowing that in years gone by this is where Hull residents would have persuaded visiting mariners to share their wealth with them.

' The Hull cultural Green brick volley'

During our visit we witnessed no hostilities.

I've just checked on google earth (assuming its current)......

Unfortunately not all the bars have the Barrier erected around them.
Ironically one of the pubs/restaurants where the missiles came from in called The GREEN BRICKS ;)

We went to Donna Nook on Sunday, where about 1500 seals land each year in November and December to have their babies. Quite amazing!

It's a bit South of Hull, but worth a visit and, whilst there, you could include a visit to Hull, although we didn't :)

Used to go to Hull for SWMBO's works do, went to the fanciest Chinese in town and was assaulted by a drunk diner, poor chap so so sloshed that his first attempt at a windmill shot completely missed me.
Ahhh fond memories lol
