OK I have the quote and the discount offered but how much does an order fro Hong Kong get wacked by Customs and Exercise.

I assume 17.5% VAT but is there import duty as well?

At present I am in the normal dilema.

1. I did not really want to buy a new sail right now.

2. It would be nice to buy from a UK source.

3. I will buy from a UK sailmaker if only a little dearer, obviously need to price up comparison cost from hong Kong suppliers.

4. I need to source a ball bearing car system eg Fredrickson/Ronstan as cheaply as possible.

5. Can anyone point me in the direction of the sail dimensions for a Jeanneau Sun Odysessy 43.

All have to be suitable for heavy charter boat abuse!!

Roger,

Before you place your order, give Ivan at Arun sails a call. I have just ordered sails from him and I am supplying the FB main sail cars (off the old sail).

I too looked to buy from UK as long as price was reasonably competitive & last winter researched & got about 8 quotes from UK (based) firms for a mainsail & stackpack & lazy jacks- same spec for all- good comparable quotes from Kemp, Quay & Arun, but even better from Crusader & their price for the cruising mainsail, with 3 reefs & 8oz Marblehead Dacron was only marginally more (<10%) than the price given for a standard 2 reef main from one of the HK based suppliers. Now used it for a season & very pleased with the kit & I hope helping to keep UK jobs.

Its surprising how little extra it costs to upgrade to a decent cruising cloth. It proves, I think, that most of the cost is in the labour.

Yes I bought, and am very happy with my HK Genoa, from a uk agent, at less than half the price quated locally.
The price included vat and postage.
It is the labour in this country which makes them so expensive as it is a labour intinsive job, but I am sure greedy buisness owners has a lot to do with it too.
