Does anybody happen to have bearing and seal detail for the Whitlock steering gearboxes handy?
It would save me having to strip one to get the part numbers. I last replaced them 34,000bm ago. Noticed some play in one of the gearboxes at the autopilot so plan to rebuild and reshim.
Thanks

Lewmar have a technical support department who you can call or email. I dealt with someone called Simon over my replacement gearbox who was very helpful and knowledgeable. I recall the whole affair was complicated with variations in shaft length and diameter. However I would imagine the bearings and shims are probably standard. If not they will be horribly expensive from Lewmar.... I replaced as the box had decade's of corrosion damage and is a bit vital that it works.

Please let us know how you get on for future reference as my outside steering one needs reshimmed.

I last shimmed the boxes 10 years ago. It's quite easy as the gearboxes contain shims of different thicknesses. As they wear you need to remove shims. The trick is removing the correct thickness shim. I have a shim I removed last time. This time I just need the bearing and seal reference so I can order some. Failing that info I will have to strip the box and recover the numbers. I know these use 1" shafts and 1" bearings but that all I remember. I never wrote down the part numbers?received_756971638999753.jpeg

You probably need the model number unless they are all the same.

Thanks for the picture. My challenge is extracting the thing without trashing the woodwork to get clearance to remove it from the shafts.

The shaft is now out of the gearbox. It's badly scored from where the bearing collapsed. I managed to find bearings. They are 7/8x 1 1/8x 1/2" if anybody needs to know. I am trying to get the shaft sleeved as they aren't made anymorereceived_1483547972098886.jpeg

A good motor engineering workshop will be able to tell you where you can get it metal sprayed and reground locally.
It's pretty rough down the whole length so was thinking sleeving might be easier. Had that done before at reasonable cost.
I will see what the machine shop suggest. Slight problem is the gearbox is in Curacao and I am now in the UK so it a question of what I can get done there. I will be taking bearings back with me to reassemble

Looking at the shaft I would think metal spraying was possible and the way to go but it will require a good engineering shop with the set up to do it. Whether such a thing exists in Curacao I don't know but without doubt it does in the UK and the US.

Agreed. I have had a crank metal sprayed before in the UK. Curaçao has good engineering shops so we will see what the boatyard engineer can come up with. They are rebuilding engines regularly so know every engineering shop on the island
