.... or refill??

've got one of these which has been refilled but continues to leak slowly, so there is a big bubble in it.

Firstly, if I wanted to refill it, how do i do it, and what with?

Secondly, can I buy any old replacement binnacle compass and will it fit, (i.e. are they standard sizes), or is there more to it than that?

(I know there will be more to it, cause that's how it is with boats!!)

I had the same prob with a Sestral, I got onto them, they supplied a new diaphram and the fluid, much cheaper than a new compass. The fluid can be very specific to each make, viscosity, s.g., etc. I would be suprised if there wasn,t a compass adjuster/repairer in Portimao.

http://www.compassadjuster.co.uk/ will probably be able to refurbish your existing compass, he's done three of mine, although I'm unsure of the situation with the last item I gave him to look at.

Sadly even in the late eighties, compass manufacturers largely pleased themselves regarding pitch-circle diamaters and fixing diameters so it it probable that a modern unit, even of the same outside diameter base will need an adaptor ring made to fit the existing PCD of your binnacle.

If the compass is important to you and/or a valuable antique it is possibly a cost effective option to have it refurbished.
