Can anyone give me advise on Whitehaven Marina as a berth holder or visitor .thinking of mooring our yacht there permanently so far looks and sounds good but have not spoken to to any berth holders yet any info would be great cheers
I visited early June last year. Nice location, friendly staff, good facilities.
One issue though. There was a conflict of interest between fishing boat repair and marina. My boat and my near neighbours were well showered with metal grindings. The resolution would be for the Harbour Authority to allocate another area for the fishermen? I fully expect this to have been sorted. A telephone call to confirm this is the case might be prudent?
We have been here for the last six years and its only getting better as there has been quite a lot of investment since we first relocated. An additional 100+ new berths put in the south harbour (there are two others Lowther and Queens which we are in). Fishing boats can't do any work without permit from the harbour commissioners etc. Some pictures here http://www.yachtconosur.com/home-port.html
and a video of leaving Queens which gives and idea of the 'look' and layout of Queens, commercial, lowther and sealock as we pass through them here www.youtube.com/watch?v=n87dcOIAVFY
Facilities are great, secure parking (secure marina) and in a really friendly town. Good sailing range for day/weekend/or base for all the NW scotland / Ireland
We have been berth holders for the last 18 months.
We are in the South Harbour (also known as the West Strand). It's cheaper but a longer walk to the facilities. The only problem we have had is that strong on shore winds bring sand over the harbour wall. I think it's only a problem at the West Strand, our first winter was in Lowther section and it didn't happen then.
The showers have underfloor heating although we find the water temperature on the cool side. It's a push button system with no temperature adjustment.
A rough guide to the lock;
- Manned 24/7.
- Closed for maintenance 1 week per year (February this year).
- You can transit the lock with a tide of 1.4m plus your draft plus an allowance for swell if any. At neaps our 1.3m draft has almost no restriction.
- The lock operates in "free flow" (both gates open) when the tide is above 6m ish. At springs that's several hours.
- The approach channel has a shallower area close to the south pier head. See: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h3ysjrsunisypf6/AABreyBOBb9GeRT-SgPrPDN7a?dl=0
