I noticed last weekend for the first time white smoke coming from the outdrives exhaust when on the plane. The higher the regime, the more smoke. This is not noticeable at low speeds.

Boat has twin D4's 225 HP (2007).

Any suggestions as to the cause ?

Thanks,
Alain

Im not familiar with these engines and I wouldn't call myself a knowledgeable mechanic but my best guess from that limited knowledge is that is not burning oil due to the colour of the smoke and it's more likely to be air mixture or fuel related e.g. running rich, stuck air mixture valve (vacuum adjusted at higher revs?) blocked air filter? dirty injectors, water in fuel? and I guess another possibility is blown head gasket with water entering the chamber(s) under load.

Alain - is it white smoke, or is it steam? Could it be something as simple as the exhaust gases now hitting colder air on exit than throughout the summer? Especially if you are not noticing any decline in performance.

Coming from both or mainly one side (if you can tell). White smoke (not steam) from a Turbo diesel engine can mean a fueling issue or could be a turbo. We had a turbo go years ago and white smoke billowed out when revved. But wait for a reply from one of the Volvo engineers on here......

A critical question (already mentioned) is "does it happen on both engines at the same time?" This narrows the problem down significantly to what the engines have in common. The chances of having the exact same problem on both engines at the same time are millions to one unless it's due to a common occurance.
Have a brainstorm on it but there is not much, fuel? humidity?, air temperature?

dont care wat colour of smoke a got long as the donkeys perform . take this advise on board. or spend ££££££££ for no reason.

Thanks for all feedback so far.

Can't tell if it is smoke or steam. What's the difference ?
Could also not see if it was left or right as I was alone on the boat and had to steer as well :-) but thoughts were starboard drive.
It wasn't that cold, maybe 12°C. But could be drop in temperature, hence just steam.
Engines ran OK otherwise, no drop in performance.
Boat goes in winter storage next weekend, will do a short test drive with engineer before taking the boat out.

Boats always keep us busy, no ? :o

99.9% chance of it being steam going by its quick disaperance and the lack of a fall in performance..the only time you should worry is if it turns blue
