Hi Folks,

Can you advise on any problems that may be encountered using white diesel as fuel for our Volvo 2002, 1986 vintage. We are fitting a new plastic fuel tank and as we sail to Belguim and Holland ,white diesel may reduce any issues with customs and the like. However I am aware that there may be technical issues using white in our engine

Many thanks

Rob

I wonder now many Cloggies run Volvo 2002 of !986 vintage on white diesel

Don't think you'll have any problems with the engine itself - the problem with white diesel in marine applications tends to be more related to the fuel system. It is supposed to be more vulnerable to diesel bug and may trigger leaks in pipe unions and gaskets.

And the Cloggies, do they have these "serious" problems too,or is their white different from ours

I did say "supposed" - personally I'm sceptical if there are any problems, but the worst that has been claimed is that the switch to white might trigger a few fuel leaks and a bit of diesel bug!

I'm also sceptical. Seems strange that it's only UK boaters who seem scared of using white diesel, when the rest of Europe has been using it for many years in tens of thousands of boats. I've only used it exclusively for 6 years but have had no problems, neither has anyone I know.

I also switched to white and have had no problems, with red you need to make sure wherever you get it from is replenished regularly, you don't want any water in there :) you could also use some bio-cide if your worried about bugs.

Pete

We switched from red to green and then from green to white. As we ALWAYS put the anti bug stuff in what ever. We have not had any problems at all.

Hope this helps. We have volvo MD 2020 year 2000.

Peter

Surely red is just the same stuff, but with red in it?

Where have you been hiding? This subject has been done to death (comprehensively covered?) and the truth is out there if you can be bothered to look.

Red is absolutely not road white with a splash of colour. As to whether it makes a difference to your donk, it all depends on the materials it's made of.

Sorry, just meandered back through this subject - red diesel to BS 2869:2006 CLASS A2 is not road diesel with pink added, is certainly not sulphur free but may contain up to 7% FAME.
