Never heard of a white parachute flare. What do you want it for ?
What's wrong with a hand held white ?
If you fire off a white parachute flare as a warning, it's not going to mark your position very well - more like act as a distraction and create confusion. A hand held white would be much more effective.

Illumination - I know they exist. Army used them all the time.

[/ QUOTE ]A bit like turning the lights on when things get difficult. Not a bad idea - don't know if they are legal or available. Would there be a risk of the flare falling on other boats if used in the vicinity of a habour of anchorage? Not a probable problem in distress once in a blue moon but maybe if we all used them? Don't know, just a thought.

Was more thinking along the lines of MOB situation at night, away from land (Biscay).

[/ QUOTE ]Good idea. Or in extremis in other situations but not just to make life easier entering harbour. Can you share the details of the supplier when you have found one? Many thanks.

do white parachute flares exist?

with them being smallrange locatio/visibilty items ...why havem on a parachute visible 25miles away? Unles of course it is to advise others in a longisgh distance race "woohoo, we're miles away you losers!" or perhaps to advise swmbo "i'll be home in four hours, dearest". Whaddya needem for?

Re: do white parachute flares exist?

It would be physically impossible for the helmsman to safely hold a handflare on my boat and we are usually just two aboard so in a MOB situation a handheld white would be pointless. Furthermore, when you consider all the smoke given off by a handflare, would a handheld white be of any use to anyone in a MOB situation? Whereas a parachute white could illuminate the whole arena.

What the heck if someone does see it 25 miles away? No bad thing if they join the search - after all, MOB when the casualty is missing is about as serious an emergency as can happen at sea. I don't see why you derided the OP; it seems like a sensible question.

I have 4 off with a couple clipped by the hatchway.

All boats who sail at night should have them IMO. Anything that aids SAR in the dark has to be good idea.

Mine went out of date in Dec 2004 so will be shopping again myself in 2007!

Here in NZ I have seen white illuminating parachute flares available in the stores of provedores that serve commercial vessels, and recall "Comet" as being one manufacturer I have seen. As far as I know, the ones generally sold for illumination only rise to about 1/3 the height that a red parachute does and are close to the same price ie expensive.

Perhaps similar provedores in UK would stock them.

Whoa boy! I didn't deride him at all. I asked question, I made lighthearted gags. Is it really important to you to have a go at someone with every post you make?

Same as me, you have a good few years left then.

The biggest argument I see for old flares is 'oh they lose their colour after time'. Well white is white init?

Looking at the price that Brendan found, buying at allgadgets saved me a fortune.
