hello folks

my prop shaft runs through a white metal bearing (as opposed to a cutlass type).
Can anyone recommend a supplier (1" shaft).
doesn't appear to be a common item these days?

Could you do something with this. It is 1 1/4 OD You would have enough material for 2 :)

I had my inboard bearing re-metalled by this firm a few years ago:-

http://www.jelbearings.co.uk/

Very reasonable price and good service BUT I see from the website that the lead time is now 6 months!

If it's just re-metalling you want, might be worth having a look at the classified ads in a vintage car/motorbike magazine.

Yes, we supply direct replacements for white metal, just give us the shaft size and the carrier ID after old white metal removed and you can epoxy in a new composite bearing.

The new composites don't creep or wipe like white metal so should also last longer.

Second that-some years ago I had mine done on my old boat by a firm specialising in old cars.A firm as I recall I used some years before to remetal some unobtainable big end shell bearings.
They are out there.

When my white metal shaft bearing got too rattly I bored out the remaining white metal and pressed in a nylon replacement. It gets a half-turn of the shaft greaser every trip - just like the old white metal one did. It has been in service now for 10 years with no sign of wear.

thanks all.
I'm going to measure the clearance again (~1mm from memory), before I re-install the engine & shaft.
Anyone got a feel as to how much clearance is too much?
(I imagine it's the origional bearing at 34years).

We would be looking at around 0.13mm clearance new and change when it approaches 0.62

As a rough guide a replacement composite bush 25 x 35 x 50 is £31.00, these are machined as a clearance in the old carrier and simply inserted in coated in epoxy, but as paddington said the shaft can have some wear and this needs to be checked.

hi Neil.
currently getting a new shaft made up (some uneven wear at the outboard end - largly due to a collapsed engine mount).

I test fitted the new shaft stock (1" diameter) in the existing bearing. I'm getting around 0.3mm play in the horizontal and 0.5mm in the vertical. Its a white metal bearing with a 3mm wall & looks like it will need machining out.

So what you reckon, time to replace the bearing too?
