Hello everyone!! I hope that everyone is having a nice boating season. My boat should be plopped in the water this week.. the family and I cannot wait!

I have a 28' Single screw Contessa. I bought my boat late last season and only had 1 trip out on it. I went to the fuel station to put gas in her. As I was filling the tank... the filler hole was whistling REAL loud. The guy working fuel at the dock even questioned me why it was doing that. So.. that goes to show you that it was a LOUD whistle from air escaping. I had to fill the tank extremely slow or the fuel would come back out the filler tube. The tank was near empty and it whistled throught the refilling process. It was so embarrasing that I stopped at 70 gallons

I am sure that the reason for this is that the air is having to escape thru the filler hole BUT what would cause this to happen??

I noticed that there is some sort of check valve located in the 'vent tube' of the filler neck. could this be the problem?? I took it off last year and it seemed to be working properly.

Any ideas or suggestions??? At this rate it, ... it would take about 45 minutes to fill my 120 gallon tank.

I want to thank everyone in advance for taking the time to read my post.

Hope everyone is enjoying thier boating season!!!

Best wishes..
TOM

You should be venting to atmosphere via a vent tube from somewhere below that check valve as you call it!

For Contessa specifics sugeest you try Joining the BOC as in the link I sent you yesterday, quite a few owners on there.

Hey Rob... Thanks for the BOC link. Yes I did join the club and posted the same ?'s there. I figured that I would post it here too... hoping to find someone who has had this happen to them. IMO... these are some great sites!! I'm really glad to have joined them. I spent all night at work looking at the posts and learned alot!!!!

Hello Twisterowner!. I certainly wished that they had a picture of one. Then I could identify whether it is INDEED a whistle. It is a very good possiblity that it is. HOWEVER.... I am still in a situation that I have to refuel my tank VERY slowly or I will end up with fuel spirting out the filler neck.
To be honest... the whistle is such a clean sound... It is quite possibly the device that is described in that link you sent me.

Anyway... thank you for your help. Maybe I will remove this "thing" in my vent line and see if the noise goes away.

Have a great day...

I'm sure I've seen them advertised somewhere but I can't remember where. I've tried Googling various combinations of vent, filler, tank, whistle etc but no luck! Why don't you try disconnecting the vent temporarily and seeing what happens? If it is a whistle in the line it must impede the airflow to some extent.

I also have problems filling my tank [all 12 gallons of it!] at anything like a decent speed but the problem is caused by a very long breather pipe which leads at a very shallow angle to a location behind the after end cockpit coaming. One of these days I will do something about re-routing it but meanwhile I find that removing the dipstick from the tank and filling through a funnel helps.

Yep.. it IS indeed a whistle!. I want to post a picture of mine so everyone can see it but I cannot figure out how. Anyway, I guess that I am one of the few people out there who have one of these contraptions on there boat.

Here is a link to one:

I also plan on checking the vent line from obstuctions and replacing it. It seems that it may be obsructed and causing the backflow of fuel because it cannot 'burp'.

I will post a followup once I complete all this and get to the fuel station and check it out.

I wast to sincerely thank all of your for your thoughts and suggestions!! I am hooked on this site! There is alot of information here.I have searched many sites over the past few days and I love this one and www.baylinerownersclub.org. There are alot of nice knowledgable people on these sites!!

Thank you everyone... check out the pic of mine.

Best wishes.

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif That's cleared a few things up. When you said 'gas' I thought you meant gas, as in propane/methane. It's a petrol boat, isn't it? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
