I have used my spinnaker pole to hold out my genoa but found it a bit clumsy to use. Would I be much better off spending some money on a proper whisker pole, and is there much difference in the poles?
A spinnaker pole is normally the length of the J measurement which is from the horizontal distance from the front of the mast to the foot of the forestay, A whisker pole can be made the length of the foot of the genoa. If you have say a 150% genoa it is certainly an adventage to use a whisker pole. If the jib is only 100% then there is little advantage. Normally a job pole can be 60% of the diameter of a spinnaker pole.
I use a whisker pole that's about 20% longer than foot of genoa - it lets me fly the headsail almost square, whereas spin pole holds it much too close. Best would be an adjustable going from J to long enough to get the genoa square IMHO
