Hi,

What's the best size (thickness) whipping twine to get for general use on the boat ? Also, do I need waxed or unwaxed ? And where can I get 3mm mousing cord which doesn't cost an arm and a leg ?

Thanks,

Boo2

I have some English Braids waxed whipping twine. The reel has "HEAVY" printed on it and it is pretty thick 3 ply twine. If you can find "MEDIUM" it might be better for general use, as "HEAVY" needs a large needle with a pretty big eye in it.

I find waxed is far better than unwaxed. The latter tends to come unravelled.

The only reel at home is Marlow size 8

Marlow sizes are

Thin ... size 2 ... 0.5 mm

Medium ... size 4 ... 0.8mm

Large ... size 8 ... 1.1mm

X large ... size16 ... 1.8mm

Size 8 will cover most uses, perhaps size 4 for dinghy rigging
Size 2 for very light lines and size 16 for heavy warps etc

Sizes of other makes are slightly different. Medium Liros is 1.0mm and heavy 1.5mm

As for mousing cord ???????
I suggest you use a cordless mouse :D

Unfortunately, most chandlers only stock one size and perhaps two colours of whipping twine.

For mousing, I avoid the chandler's like the plague! On the assumption that the mousing line is not going to be subjected to years of UV degradation or massive loadings, I pick up light lines, probably polypropylene, from places like Wickes. Mind you, I will buy a cheap reel of line when I see it if I don't currently have a spare.

Rob.

P.S. Don't like the flat, waxed whipping twine which was all I could get last time. Doesn't make a neat job at all.
