OK, I know there have been similar questions, but as they didn’t really answer my problem whilst I was lurking, so I thought I would ask!

As a back ground – I passed my full Yachtmaster offshore back in ~ 1982 or so, having been sailing since around 12 years old, I also taught dingy, windsurfing, and sailing back in the 80’s through late 90’s.

I am now looking to complete my YM Ocean – I am fairly up to speed with all the aspects needed having been so involved previously, however as I never actually took the test, or the practical following; I really need to complete a course and pass/complete the theory before doing the practical.

Since I am based in Scotland but actually work away almost every week some form of evening class is out of the question. (It is not always the same location each week either )

It does however leave me plenty of dull evenings with which to complete a correspondence type course!

I have looked at NMCS (National Marine Correspondence School) , Ocean Training (via Stormforce), Centaur Sailing, and a few others.

I am really toying between NMCS and Centaur – Centaur is considerably cheaper, but NMCS appears more professional (although ultimately this is just based on the website).

I am more interested in a quality course and professional test/exam than the financial aspects – but unfortunately price alone does not guarantee the quality!

Does anyone have actual experience of these courses from any vendor – ideally for YMOc?

Thanks

BB

I had looked at Chichester , but couldn't find ocean courses listed.

Do they do it?

BB

EDIT

I have checked up - Jo Gray has confirmed they don't do the course unfortunately

Must say it was a quick and efficient reply though!

BB - Interested to know which way you jump, and any feedback you have on the course/materials whilst you're doing it. Thanks, Malc

Hi,

I did my Yachtmaster with www.yachtmaster.co.uk

Good support and easy to get in touch with. They were more than happy to post out modules in advance as like yourself I spend alot of time away from my home and didn't want the faf of having to wait for one module to be completed before having the next issued.

Current price is showing as £260 and they are running a two for one offer, so if you know of anyone who wants do do their day or coastal/yachtmaster you both might save some money.

Hope this helps.

Hello. Which is the best correspondence course for the Yachtmaster (MCA approved)?

Do I need a number of days at sea to receive the full qualification?
What more can I study on successful completion for this course, so as to continue upgrading my curriculum?
