I'm about to embark on repairing some ribs on my boat. Just repairing a few small cracks part way through by grafting in some laminated sections as discussed on this forum some time ago. The existing timber is Canadian Rock Elm apparently. Does anyone know if this can still be obtained in UK - I guess there's not much elm around these days. If I can't get CRE in fairly small quantities what would be a good substitute? Not oak I guess as there are some galvanised bolts to consider.

Having seen that nobody else has had a go at answering you, I have an old Robbins Catalogue that shows that they do a limited range of Elm. Whether it's suitable, I don't know. They are in Bristol, 0117 963 3136. I guess having galvanised bolts rules out oak and that kind of limits the possibilities. Bolts through ribs though?

Thanks for that Tillergirl. Unfortunately Robbins and I don't get on very well - small matter of some marine ply that was absolute rubbish, so I will try to avoid them. But thanks for the suggestion anyway.
