I want to find where the wooden studs are behind the wooden panelling above gun whale height. I want to fit some shelving and stuff, and think it better to screw into the studs, rather than the flimsy panelling.

There seem to lots of stud detectors, and lots of poor reviews.... Any suggestions for a reasonable quality DIY detector?

Many Thanks

Richard

Hull frames are usually about 600mm centres. I'm not sure if this is the same for narrowboats? Look for where the bulkhead panels are screwed into the frames. As for stud detectors: A magnetic type would be of little use in a metal boat. I don't know how effective the internal capacitor type would be? Best bet is remove one panel to confirm the centre distance then use a chalk line and tape measure to mark the rest.

Get one that finds metal, then find the fixings and mark them in vertical rows . Ashore I use magnets but on a boat with non ferrous fixings that won't work. I have a very expensive stud finder but it is far from reliable.

I think the OP is in a cast iron narrowboat :)

At least, he says so in his signature and it's the only way I can conceive of a boat having stud walling and wood panelling above the gunwales :)

Well spotted!

The concensus seems to be that the last thing I need is a stud detector.
