Which spares to hold on board and how to store them?

My boat is in Croatia and I have problems getting all but the most common spare parts for it there so I'm thinking of substantially increasing the stock of spares I hold on board. Apart from the obvious engine and generator spares, which spares would you think about buying? I'm thinking about stuff, failure of which could seriously ruin a cruising holiday like a spare shaft seal, alternator, freshwater pump, aircon seawater pump etc. I'm probably going to keep the boat for another 3 years.
Any suggestions?
Also I'm running out of stowage space in my lazarette. Anybody got any ideas for some kind of freestanding stacked box system for storing this stuff?

There's a load of these waterproof boxes of my boat that contain a multitude of spares:

Thankfully, they came with the boat but they are cheap as chips in the USA and there might be an equiavlent available in the UK. They are very useful and do stack well in lockers.

As for what spares to keep, here's a few other uggestions that you haven't already mentioned:

- Service kit, spare vacuum breaker and spare duckbill valves for the heads (assuming you've got the Vacuflush type)
- Spare macerator (assuming you use blackwater tanks)
- Domestic waterpump pressure switch and seal kit
- Bulbs
- Alternator regulator
- A few hoseclips
- Prop anodes & tab washers
- Perhaps something like this to drop in the fuel tanks (if not full for the winter): http://www.oilybits.com/water-removal/water-seeker/prod_217.html
- Fluids for everything including steering, any hydraulics etc

and probably loads more.

Mike,
when I have a broken part, I tend to buy one extra for spare, but usually that part never breacks again, don't you have that experience ?

very difficult to say what you need,
I have all kinds of filters, belts, fluids, hoses, screws, tapes,
but I'm afraid the part that I'll need the other day, I don't have it.
such as a winch, a alternator, a gearbox, a relais, .....

for storage,
I try to find or make acces to hidden spaces between walls, or somewhere under the floor, and use these for storage for spare parts or special tools that I hardly ever need.

I have a couple of plastic drawer storage units from B&Q. IThe 'originals' don't lock but I put a hole at the top and attached a bungee - opens all the drawers easily with one move. Easy, cheap, effective. Fit easily into lazarette and translucent so I can see what's in them. I can never remember what I put where if I use 'spare' spaces.

box of O rings

I inch hose
1.5 inch hose
2 inch hose
90 degree and U bends to match
1 m reinforced 4 inch lay flat hose to cover repair

Most parts can be reconditioned quayside on a temporary basis.
Good vice
Good drill
lots of drill bits

and if all else fails there's not a lot you cant repair with a hammer and a big roll of tape (self amalgamating) ;)
