I have got a leak coming in through the Davit bolts. What is the best sealant to use between GRP and metal? Can I use the stuff from B&Q or do I need to buy proper marine stuff?

The standard silicon sealant is not much good for this. You need some form of adhesive sealant (e.g. Sikaflex or wurth etc), or a caulk like boatlife.

The only sealant that self etch primes itself to Stainless and sticks to GRP is 3M UV4000. It also wont yellow or crack under UV and salt, only colour it comes in is white.

Let me know if you want some or more info.

Not any more the main brunt of the British manufacturers are using UV4000 because it sticks to both stainless and GRP there are fewer causes for warranty claims.

Most new boats have it now. Again sika flex can crack and yellow in sunlight whereas UV 4000 wont.

Ok you may pay £1.50 more for a tube of it but its well worth the extra.

Rick P can vouch for its stickiness too.

Hmm, you learn something new everyday! In my neck of the woods, Sikaflex is the preferred adhesive, although 3m is widely used by the yanks, unless of course they are using Plexus.

Save yourself a pound or two and stick (no pun intended) with Sikaflex, it's still the most widely used and imvho the best!
