.. and as a secondary question, what is its main use?

I have a new Icom 801E and Pactor 4 modem being installed and expect most comms to arrive via HF.

SAT phone would be for tracking and very occasional phone contacts.

Thank you.

OK, so we are not becoming liveaboards until April but we have an Iridium extreme with the iridium accesspoint. Also have a fixed antenna on the stern T bar. Tried it out last summer. very pleased with it. grib files, emails and quick calls home.

We have Iridium 9522a - have used it for the past 6 years for grib, e-mail, occasional phone calls home and, a couple of times, liaising with MRCC's.

Once set up worked fine. Linked to a stand-alone, solid state computer from Digital Yacht used as a backup chart plotter.

Iridium 9555 with external antenna, bought secondhand for emergency contact use and backup for Gribs and e-mail if we have any trouble with the SSB. Switched on whenever we are out of mobile phone range. Will probably use it more towards the end of the 1 year pre-paid period just to use up the minutes we bought but so far it's hardly been used.

Also an icom and a fleet 150.

The 150 provides far better than i expected internet access plus the usual text and phone. Obviously quicker and more versatile than the 150 but the 150 perfect for net chats and radio.

Thank you all... given the good quality of the HF kit, I'll try to get a second hand unit. Looking at all your suggestions.

Also check out the Delorme Communicator. I have the early one and Geem has the later one. I am impressed. We weather route each other. It works by email and it is a tracker.

Ancient Motorola 9500 Iridium. Bought secondhand in 2002. Still works well but the slightly later 9505 is better as it can tend texts as well as receive them. Later models even better as they have data capability built in.

Completed the purchase of a Delorme Explorer. All functions except voice...

Given my HF fitment, we should manage without voice Satphone.

Thank you all for your inputs.
