Which rope cutter for \"P\" bracket mounting, please?

Has anyone had problems as a result of fitting either "spurs" or "stripper" to a "P" bracket - or would it be better to fit a Proprotector shaft knife? "P" brackets appear to me to be fragile and in a recent incident I understand that fouling a mooring bent the bracket to such an extent that lots of water poured in...

Re: Which rope cutter for \"P\" bracket mounting, please?

I fitted the spurs model based on good esperience on another boat where I know it worked.
However accurate drilling and tapping of holes is required which I didn't find that easy working under the boat in February. If I needed to do it again I would look for soemone to do it for me provided I was happy they had done it many times before !

Fitted a Stripper twice on different boats. No problems - just follow the insructions to the letter and make sure you have the correct taps for threading the holes - Ambassador will supply these although I got mine at a specialist tool store.

One further point, I had to get a spacer to fit between the gear box & shaft as there was not enough room for the Stripper unit. However, no problem and supplied very quickly by Ambassador Marine.

Hope this helps.

I had a problem with a Stripper but no blame could be attached to the equipment. I fouled a length of polyproylene about 16 mm thick. The stripper worked partially but finally admitted defeat, as a result of the large number of turns wrapped around it. The result was that the screws holding the static cutter to the P-bracket pulled out. When I discussed this with Ambassador they told me that the fixed part is designed to fail before the P-bracket can be damaged and that the screws pulling out is unusual. I assume that some corrosion had occurred around the screws, weakening the metal of the bracket.

As I didn't even realise that anything had happened until we saw the cut rope trailing astern I was quite content. Later I removed the turns of rope from the prop with some difficulty, using a serrated bread knife that was perfect for the job. If the Stripper had not been fitted we would almost certainly have been 'moored' in an unwelcome situation.

I had a similar experience with a STRIPPER to Vyv .... after picking up a very heavy mooring warp and hanging stern-to for several hours in poor conditions, the fixed part fell off after an hours motoring and was lost. In my case it turned out that the P-bracket was badly dezincified (it had never been electrically bonded ....but that is another debate).

Other than that problem, the STRIPPER hjas been excellent and would not be without one.

And another vote for the stripper. Only once actually felt it work when we ran over a small tree(?)/sapling afloat in the river. Made an almighty crunching noise and all this sawdust floated out astern..... Been a devotee ever since.
Good customer service fom Ambassador as well.

Fit the Stripper or Spurs - the Protector does not work at all well. (according to tests by the boat mags.

Many thanks for all your replies - had spurs on previous boat but not on a "p" bracket - just a bit concerned about the possible loading on the bracket...
