Which reefing system?

I'm thinking of installing (headsail) roller reefing an a Westerly Longbow ketch (31ft). Any ideas as to a reliable system at as reasonable cost as possible?

Does anyone know where I might find a comprehensive list of systems (with reviews if possible).

Would I need to replace my forestay?

Are there any companies who sell reefing / genoa packages?

What should I expect to pay for a reasonable system?

One of these magazines did a report on them fairly recently. I hjave a furlex, which comes with everthing you need, including a new forestay! I have had no trouble atall with mine in 5 years, so would reccomend them to you. by way of maintenance, they only need hosing out of the bearings occasionally and re-greasing, I'm still using the grease that was supplied with it, so it doesnt use a lot!

Most Sailmakers will supply packages - Kemp and Crusader spring to mind.

I've had two Rotostay packages from Crusader for two different boats and have been very pleased with them. The Rotostay has been fault free.

Roller furling gear puts more strain on the forestay so I would advise you change this anyway unless yours is very new. The Crusader package came wih a new forestay - they wouldn't supply it without. Some roller furlers fit over your existing forestay. It makes the installation easier but could result in a dismasting at an awkward moment if your forestay is weak.

I have two Furlex furlers and they work excellent. So, certainly recommendable, but I have no experience installing them, as they were the original equipemnt of the boat.
My brother has fitted a Nemo furler himself and says that it was particularly easy, he's had it now for 4 years and is very pleased with it. It seems very high quality for the price.

I've currently got a Furlex which seems to work OK. Previously had the much maligned Plastimo 608 which I had from new and also worked OK. In addition to the companies already mentioned Seateach do Sail/furling gear/forestay packages.
