I am heading up river from Thames Dutton. Where should I stop for a pump out? I know there is one at Mosley but I don't know where to get the card and this would be the first time. I might need someone to show me how to do it.

Can you wait til the other side of Boveney lock, assuming you're coming this far?

The staff at MDL Windsor (not Windsor Racecourse) should be more than willing to show you how it's done. It's also on the river frontage so no detors around marinas or up channels.

With any pump out, it's always best to ring ahead to make sure the pump's not out of commission.

You can buy cards for the Environment Agency pump-out machines, including Molesey, from the lock-keepers.

The procedure is described on the machine and is not difficult.

Otherwise, there is a pump-out at Shepperton Marina. Like the EA ones it is self service and you need to buy a token from the office.

I think that there is also a pump-out at Ditton Marina and, like most boatyards, they will do the work for you and the price usually includes the chemicals too. The problem I find with Ditton Marina is that they are never open when I need them!

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know that Thames Ditton Marina had pump out. This is where I am based so will do it there if someone is arround. Otherwise, I like the sound of the helpfull people at MDL Windsor. I am not certain that the various pump to sea valves are in the right position. I don't want to recreate a scene from the film Brazil.

It's an awfully long way to go for a pump out, although I'm sure there are better reasons to visit Windsor

Far be it for me to say, but it ain't rocket science:-
  1. Undo the cap on the deck fittings (large and small - labelled "pump out" and "rinse"
  2. unreel the large hose by the machine
  3. Ditto the small hose pipe
  4. Gently push the stub on the valve in the large hole and the hose in t'other
  5. Go to the lock office and purchase a card (? £8)
  6. Pop the card in the machine "upside down" IIRC
  7. Go back to the valve at the end of the hose and open it
  8. Wait while the machine asthmatically chugs away - if there's a sight glass wait until the liquid stops / or wait, say 3 minutes
  9. Put the machine on hold
  10. Push the rinse tap and hold for say, a couple of minutes
  11. go back to the machine and press the hold button again to release it
  12. Repeat steps 7 to 11 above until you get bored or the machine stops running
  13. Turn the valve off (stops dribbles) and GENTLY remove the head unit.
  14. Put everything back as you found it - or better...

It's not really unpleasant, there will be a slight whiff. If bothered get a stout pair of rubber gloves.

You get up to 12 minutes and I can do a really good pump and flush for both my tanks (which are 30 gallons each) in 10 minutes or less - without rushing.

The first time's the worst, 'cos you don't know what to expect!

Ooh...... His and hers eh ? :D

Yes, MemSahib gets the posh one with the bath, and I get the pokey little hole in the back. Part of my design for duplication of facilities....
Nasty getting caught short out in the sticks with a long way to go to the next pumpout station.

One of the many advantages of a LTTT.

You mean there are boats which do not have two heads?

SWMBO insisted we needed two when we bought this boat....

:D

I still get the job of emptying though.....

:mad::mad::(

Thames Ditton Marina has just had a new pumpout motor delivered, should be back in operation this coming week so I am told. Service even includes free toilet additive. Have been using the Molsey one which was fine but its nice to have someone do it for you.:)

I only have one degree of list to tank side but it has been "backing up" e.g toilet operating in reverse direction. There are some gadgets attached to pipes and a redj light is showing. However, smell is good so far. I suspect big wake will slosh stuff back were it came from but reckon I can make it to Windsor:mad:

You can take a horse to water.......

Thanks for the advice. It was reckless delaying, I know, but the people at Windsor were very helpful today. They even gave me an extra token when I took too long flushing. Found out that my my pump out port is slightly smaller than the standard size but it works well enough without an adapter. The guage is still showing red even though it is definately empty, however, the list to post has improved slightly. There was no bad smell, which is strange because I don't use chemicals.:)
