I see that International paints sell primer to use under their Topcoat.

Although I realise that good paint is a complex and valuable thing (I am planning to use some Toplac for finishing off a small boatbuilding project), is there anything special in the formulation of their primer? Or would any old primer do as well?

e.g. I have some of this left over

http://www.dulux.ca/diy/products/primers/dulux-weatherguard-acrylic-exterior-primer

is it likely to do its job properly?

Substrate: epoxy coated ply/wood

Use: hull

I repainted my transom with Toplac, and due to mis-reading the data sheet I didn't use any Pre-Kote at all.

18 months later, still looks like it was done last week, so my gut feeling would be you'll be fine. Maybe someone knows explicitly...

Pre-Kote is an undercoat, recommended for use before Toplac finish. You wouldn't need a primer before using Pre-Kote.

There's so much work involved in painting; why risk it for the sake of a tin of the recommended stuff?

Personally I wouldn't put acrylic under polyurethane....... but somebody will be along in mo to explain why I'm wrong.

You may be right but Toplac is not a polyurethane!

Whether or not a primer is required depends on the substrate. PreKote can be applied to GRP without and AFAICS also to epoxy.

The Second coat of PreKote ( 2 coats are recommended ) can be mixed 50:50 with Toplac for improved depth of colour. You'd not be able to do that with Weatherguard !
Apart from this I have no idea if Weatherguard would be a suitable undercoat for Toplac or how well it will perform on an epoxy substrate. 'I'd not risk it.

On my wooden boat, there is no point using toplac or hemple deck paint unless I sand back, prime, 2 coats prekote then do at least 2 top coats. Any thing less just peels off after a season or two. Do it right and it last many more.
