I've only stayed at Mayflower and whilst the facilities are very good it can get very bouncy, particularly on the outside pontoons. It got pretty bouncy and I was only three boat from the shore close to the office (where you are overlooked by people on their balconies). It is also a long way from shops and restaurants except the good restaurant on site. A good chandlers there too.
Mayflower : owned by berth holders, well run, open to SW winds, can get bumpy on the outer pontoons, outer pontoons also have strong tides running through, a longish walk from the city but nice walks in nearby park.
Sutton: locked environment, can be noisy in the centre of the barbican, safest place to be in a blow.
QAB: MDL so well run, can get bumpy in a blow, easy walk to Barbican
Plymouth Yachthaven: Ferry trip to Barbican, good yard facilities, fairly sheltered
All have their plus points depends on a where you can get a berth and b what sort of boating you are going to do e.g. day boating etc
We are in Mayflower.
I would echo the comments already made.
Yes , it can get bouncy and there is a tide to contend with particularly at Springs.
I though to mention cost.
Mayflower is comparatively cheap for haul out and winter hard standing , however you are only guaranteed hard standing once every 2 years due to available space.
We moved from the ruinously expensive Torquay marina (MDL) where we found Mayflower approximately half the price.
If you want to halve that again , look at Southdown marina.
It's on the Cornwall side of the Tamar and that means the Torpoint ferry and some small roads to contend with. It will also take 30mins at least longer from the A38.
I would agree Sutton is for me far too near the Barbican with respect to noise.
The lock gates at Sutton for pedestrians , close at 21:30 so if you want to go to the Barbican it's a long walk around or a short car ride. This was not always the case. I believe it's a Yob control measure.
There is also Ballast Pound , just south of the Cornwall side of the Torpoint ferry.
Just left Yacht Haven after eight very good years there. Very sheltered, good security and extremely pleasant people to deal with. Would go back tomorrow (if no waiting list) if not for the 10% year on year price hikes that drove us out.
Yacht Haven is nice and quiet, fairly sheltered altho things can move about a bit in a blow. The new bar and restaraunt should be open shortly and it looks nice. Two good local pubs in Turnchapel. Nearby ferry accross to Barbican for livelier nightlife or day trips every 30mins until 11pm or so. Friendly and helpful staff. From above post it seems costs are rising, but I expect current market will slow that down everywhere. There is a waiting list, but take a winter berth and you will jump in as a priority.
Sutton is best according to T Cunliffe in Shell Channel Pilot, as its locked in and very sheltered, but I have heard it can be a bit noisy being so close to Barbican night life.
I went into PYH at the weekend to ask about rates. They said they would charge extra for me having the boat on the hard for about 6 weeks while I redid the electrics. Extra to me buying a berth for a year ? Bye bye.
Unfortunately it is a sellers market as far as marinas are concerned and they can charge pretty much what they want. Having said that I am at Yacht Haven and have no complaints. It is friendly, well run and (for me at least) much more handy than the in town marinas.
Southdown Marina dries to soft mud.
Better to allow for an extra hour to get there; as Torpoint ferry is often congested at the times you most want to use it. Many find it lass hassle and faster to use the bridge.
Torpoint "ballast pond" might suit, but I often feel the prices are rather high compared with an all tide marina.
Re. the night time closure of the pedestrian bridge at Sutton Harbour Lock. This doesn't cause a problem if you are berthed in Sutton Harbour. It is only a nuisance if you are at QAB.
