Which \'peche promenade\'?

Which are the best? We're looking for a used 'peche promenade' for around £21,000, mainly for messing about along the Dorset coast, adventures ashore, swimming, rare if-ever overnighting, onboard football, etc - mum, dad and two very small kids who love the water. We favour the shaft-drive diesels, ie Merry Fisher 635, Antares 620 and Ocqueteau 625/645. Looked at some at the boat show but they all seem pretty similar and there's a distinct lack of owners' experience about. Can any owners offer their opinions? Build quality, design pros and cons, genuine engine/speed combinations etc. We're quite experienced sailors but know little about motorboats. Many thanks.

Re: Which \'peche promenade\'?

I have a mate who bought a Merry Fisher a few months ago and is 'over the moon' with it. Says it's great sea boat, extremely economical and tops at 18kts cruises at 14. He has the Volvo engine option but not sure what exactly.

Re: Which \'peche promenade\'?

If I was you I'd also look at Faeton,Rodman & Starfisher. The Faeton has better performance than any of these and the French boats you mention, but is an outdrive set up. The Rodman & Starfisher seem to be more solid than the French ones.
Think you will also find that those with a closed cabin (not open to the wheelhouse) will be quieter and easier to live with.
Suggest that you go to the respective dealers and try some out.
We did this a couple of years ago and whilst we loved the practicality of the type we found that the engine noise from the shaft driven boats was too loud for comfort. In some of them the engine box was actually partially inside the wheelhouse which didn't help. We ended up spending more and getting a Ryds 23T
Good luck.

Re: Which \'peche promenade\'?

I am facinated as to why you have selected a Peche Promenade so specifically?
These craft's most endearing feature is their ability to deliver the determined fisheman to his mark in most weather conditions and get him home in conditions he would never have set out in! This and a degree of comfort adn safety at anchor or on the drift in poor conditions. All the above relative to overall boat size - ie they do this well for only 5.5 - 9 metres length (general range). To do this they tend to have a small keel and a semi displacement hull form.
You are in a very competitive market due to relatively low supply of second hand craft in this category - and the increased number of fishermen wanting one!
However if you are sure.....
Many have a 'walkround' layout to the bow and for your purposes I would suggest this is a key factor.
Get the largest you can - you will quickly want to carry a dingy (deflated) outboard, snorkel gear, fishing rods, etc etc!
Shaft drive diesels are favoured by everyone - but a nice little 4 stroke O/B is also a good ccombination and significantly cheeper.
Finally - buy in France; much larger supply and range available.

Re: Which \'peche promenade\'?

I always associate peche promenades with the walkaround facility but you're right not all of them do have this. I'd say that with a young family deep bulwarks all around are essential. If I had young children I'd only consider this type of boat.
I, like you, also think that I would seriously consider the 4stroke outboard option. It provides far greater performance for a lot less noise, albeit at a considerably increased fuel cost.
Much of one's boating is spent getting to and from the open sea or just pottering about. Small diesel boats are noisy and rough even at low speeds whereas you hardly know the modern 4stroke is running, in these situations.
The shaft driven diesels in the 6-7m models seem to go up to about 105hp which gives a top speed of around 20-22knts. Some of the outdrive or outboard models will top 30knts.
Two other brands to consider are Arvor and Quicksilver - think the latter is associated with Yamaha.
Don't know if you find it a problem or not but I find tinted plastic windscreens a pain. With salt water they get scratched and are awful to see through when it gets dark.
The best advice for any potential buyer is to go to some dealers and try the boats out and make notes at the time.

If you can wait: MBM will be running a comparative test on sportsfishers in the May issue. I believe some/all of the boats you mention will be included.

Re: Which \'peche promenade\'?

Good point re screen - has to be glass and preferably clear (looking forwards)
The ability to 'stick your head out the side window' and be see forwards at night in places like Poole Harbour is also an advantage - amazing how much vision you lose through glass even with all the instrument off etc.
I have reviews of nearly all the craft in this group through the Sea Angler mag however they are all very general on sea keeping etc ie brilliant little boats. This is relative to smaller fishing boats of course!

Re: Why a \'peche promenade\'?

Thanks for responding. The reasons for favouring a peche-promenade for family fun are: nice big cockpit for games, all-in wrestling, picnics, etc, deep coamings for safety, decent bulwarks/safety rails also for the kids' safety, shaft diesel for reliability and economy, resale value, small cabin for shelter, nappy changes, toilet, etc, but not staying aboard just yet. Based in the municipal marina in Weymouth, we're straight into open water, so need seaworthiness too and ability to get to picnic locations fairly quickly, before boredom sets in, but without slamming. I favour a shaft diesel because I'm a mechanical idiot and need reliability with economy and safety. (But would also want an o/b back-up.) Surely big outboards are not as reliable, and where the hell do you get 20 gallons of (expensive) petrol from, anyway?
If there are alternatives to peche-promenades which fit in with our needs, we'd be grateful for any suggestions. Max budget is around £21k.

Re: Why a \'peche promenade\'?

I think that you are looking at the ideal boat type for your purpose.
The different brands are very similar generally but have small but perhaps significant differences in detail. I feel ,for example, that the French boats are more stylish, especially "down below" whilst the Spanish/Portuguese ones seem to me to be "more solid".
Engine wise they all seem to offer Volvos and/or Yanmars and occasionally Nannis. The latter reputedly don't rev as high as the other two so may provide a more relaxing trip. Otherwise I'm not sure that there is a lot to choose between them, though there seems to be less moans about Yanmars, possibly because they are less common.
For you to decide which model/make is right for you there is no alternative but to try them all out if you can.
You will find that some feel much safer to walk around than others; some have the engine box sticking up above the cockpit floor or intruding into the wheelhouse more than others; some have their cabin open to the wheelhouse, others have it closed off - the latter will deaden the noise of the water around the hull and so the wheelhouse will be quieter; some will have opening windows in the wheelhouse - a definite plus point for both keeping cool in Summer and demisting when it's cold/wet. Some have a glass windscreen, others have acryllic - the latter is a pig to see through at night when it is wet or if you're looking into a low sun, unless great care has been taken to prevent it from becoming scratched. This is made even worse if the screen is heavily tinted.

When I did a search - took me 2 yrs - there was not one boat that fulfilled all items on my wish list. We ended up buying something Swedish that met most of our criteria and which was faster - with a 150hp diesel outdrive - handles superbly and which feels incredibly safe to be in.
I hope the above gives you some pointers as to what to look out for.
Best of Luck.
John

Re: Why a \'peche promenade\'?

On the petrol you do have a problem in Weymouth - but it's not all bad news 'cos you will be able to get to Lulwouth or Worbarrow and back wiht a 90hp 4stroke on the 5 gallons you bought with you from Tesco's and stuck in the tank before you left. Modern outboards of this size are very reliable (I ran a Merc 90 then Merc 175 for nearly 7 years without either hiccuping - the secret is (1) be sympathetic when they have just started and (2) to actually use them as frequently as possible!) I would be as happy setting off with a single modern OB for power as my diesel.
Basically however I think you will struggle to find significant choice for your budget ...........no doubt anyone spotting possibles will pm you. There is one boat that fit's the bill perfectly (except the engine from your perspective but it's a hell of a lot of boat for the dosh) here http:// http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/SMB013
I also like this - and as it's trade get them to chuck in the tender o/b shown in the pic as well as shaving 10%!
but my star buy would be this http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F26855 with a price paid midway between your budget and the asking price. It will do everything you are looking for and more - as I said above that extra size will make all the difference to comfort and stowage. This boat will take an inflatable tender across the back on weaver davits which, if fitted properly will give you that added security when boarding necessary with the young kids (and their stuff!). The fitted diesel heating will enable you to use it year round - and make Spring and Autumn really pleasent. The only downside I can see is that it will go fast - some sneeky forumite may even get there first!

Re: Why a \'peche promenade\'?

You asked for alternatives - well how about this? http://ybw.yachtworld.com/core/uk/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?currency=EUR&units=Meters&checked_boats=1193975&&ybw=true
This would be a really lovely craft for that area and would really give you 'cruiseability' relative to size. Lovely deck areas, safe and solid. Bet it will hold it's price well too as the manufacturer is becoming bigger and better know.
