I am having a new boat built, it will be exactly the same as my old one but I will be putting in a different engine. At first I was going to go from the Volvo 4.3GL to the Volvo 4.3GXi, both with the SX leg. I have been examining the new Volvo D3-160/SX, which as can be seen is 160hp again with the SX leg but weighing in at 310kg, compared to the 401kg of the 4.3GL and the 411kg of the 4.3GXi.

Could anyone have a guess at what the performance may be like with this new small engine. We like it as the emmisions are much better and it would perhaps be a bit more economical. I have not had the costings yet, but I would also like to know roughly what I should expect to pay over and above what a 4.3GL would cost.

Thanks,

Are you obliged to stay with Volvo?

Aren't Yanmars lighter, more economical and more reliable?

Just a thought.

Look at it in a positive way, the extra savings in the engine weight will allow me to get the radar arch and new radar fitted /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I think you will find the weight of the new D3 is amazing at 310kg. It is a 2.4ltr new 5-cylinder D3-160 is developed from the latest design in modern diesel technology. The engine is extremely lightweight and compact, combined with features like common rail fuel injection system, double overhead camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder, variable geometry turbocharger, after cooler and the ECV system (Electronic Vessel Control) a world-class diesel performance, combined with low emissions, is achieved.

For the technically minded the full spec is here :- http://www2.volvo.com/NR/rdonlyres/F03BE57E-9EEE-4F87-95EC-8A6617E7F7D2/0/D3160SX.pdf

Lucky I had my 'spare' pants /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif But she did handle it well and safely, although we went away so fast I guess nobody else saw /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Was it 3 or 4 minutes she made it from Yarmouth to Lymington in /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Volvo have stpped making smaller engines, they badge the engine in their excavator range, they are water cooled Deutz, i would bet that the new Volvo marine engines are Deutz based. If they are anything like the engines in the excavators, be prepared for trouble!!!!

But surely they would get you out of the hole quicker /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

So far as the weight saving is concerned, waste of time. You will barely notice 90 or 100kg. It is the weight of one plump bloke. How much would your performance change if there were 3 peeps in the boat instead of 4? Answer, a bit, but less than the effect of say a better prop or chucking out some gear, and not enuf to make it worthwhile changing the whole boat.

I'm only talking here about the weight, not the better environmental stuff. But the damage to the environment from making a new boat and engine is much greater than the benefit from running a slightly greener engine.....

So, imho dont bother! (There may be other factors in a boat trade-in decision of course)

Errr this wasn't the argument when I was getting bollocked for having too much gear on the boat, I am trying my best to get it lighter /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I read another article that states the new D3 is apparently the marine version of the five-cylinder D5 car engine that was introduced in 2001 for Volvo Cars. I will get the costs tomorrow, but it will not be launched in the UK until the SBS. I think the article in MBM on them was premature and a cock up, and should not have come out until later.

Ooooh. Don't let anyone at IPC hear you say that.MBM don't make cock ups. No, it's a fair preview of the forthcoming range of engines.

The 130hp does 34knots, I would hope for upwards of 40knots with the 160hp. The acceleration would be as good as the petrol I think, with the correct props. I will get the prices tomorrow, but I guess it will be another £8k or £9k for the diesel over the petrol. I am trying to calculate the economics of it, but it can change every way you look at it. I would hope that this unique one off boat would have a better re-sale value over a petrol, but don't know how much, or how much I would have to write off in my cost analysis. With a fuel bill of £800 in the last month and well on my way up again this time round, I don't really think it would be long before I broke even, but what the hell you can't take it with you /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Anyway it keeps me out of the Chandlery's, except a slight slip into one in Yarmouth on Sunday /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

"I am having a new boat built, it will be exactly the same as my old one but I will be putting in a different

Have I missed something here Pete, if the boat is "exactly the same as the old one"

1) why not put new engine in current boat if you must have new engine.

2) Whats wrong with the current engine & boat, not a year old yet.

3) Whats the point of getting a new boat the same size?????? got to go bigger
