As above...

Navionics HD charts for Europe, or
iNavX with charts thru them.

Listening intently for the accumulated wisdom...:D

If you want to know where you are (when the sun isn't shining) either will work

If you want to navigate, put in waypoints and navigate to them, than iNavX is the one to go for

Depending on your boat, budget, existing instruments and type of cruising you can get a NMEA wifi transmitter from digital yacht either the WLN10 or the iAIS if you want AIS on your iPad (as above)

What charts do you recommend for the UK? X-Traverse?

I've got both the iNavX and Imray offerings.

I prefer the Imray, probably because I grew up with paper charts and feel more comfortable with the presentation.

I've only used it with Navionics charts and they are fine, and seem to get updated every now and again. So Navionics get yer money one way or another :)

To be honest I only use our Garmin chartplotter and paper charts to navigate.

If it didn't have a chartplotter it would be a tough decision now if I was just coastal cruising.

Snooks, you are a star. Obviously, in your professional function, you've sampled a few.

Thanks.

The whole apps market is so fast moving trying to keep on top of it is like standing on a ball going down hill!

There is no standard way of doing things each Navigation app has it's own way of doing something, so when switching from Imray to Memorymap for example you feel like Wurzel Gummidge and have to change heads:D

Stupid question probably.

I have the Navionics app on ipad. I assume it does not work with iNavx. So, where do I buy Navionics charts for iNavX?

I don't have an Ipad but have been considering one.
If I am correct the wifi only Ipad does not have GPS , it has triangulation by using wifi signals. The 3G Ipad has proper GPS.
I belive the wifi only version can be used for navigating but will suffer big variations in apparent position or loss of position if out of range at sea.

The Ipad has bluetooth so you can buy a GPS dongle and give your wifi only Ipad the position data it needs for stable navigating.

However , check carefully when buying your dongle cos not all versions work with the Ipad , if I am correct.

Googling someting like "has my Ipad got GPS" brings up all sorts of links indicating there is a lot of confusion out there about this issue.

If I am correct , I intend to get a wifi only ipad a dongle and the INavx software

I would shell out the extra for 3g version.

It expands the utility of the Ipad for functions other than navigation, being tied to wifi only for e-mails and browsing etc is a pain.

I too have read about the GPS being a bit flaky in the Ipad but in open water have not had any probs. But you can still use a dongle on belt and braces principle.

Sadly you can't use a bluetooth GPS with an iPad, it's not allowed see, same way as Apple won't allow Adobe Flash on their iPad. It's their toy and they will only let their best friends makes bits for it:rolleyes:

You could however get a bad elf GPS dongle or a WLN10/iAIS if you have the right instruments
