I want something that lets two people sleep and cook in reasonable comfort, could take up to eight people for short day trips in sheltered water, would be safe to cross the Channel(60 odd miles), draws less than three feet and takes the ground without damaging its propellor. Inboard or outboard, diesel or petrol?
Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

You have omitted the most important factor, i.e. your budget.

For example a 15 years old 38' aft cockpit Dale Nelson is on offer at £179,950. Perfect for your spec, except you'd need legs.

Is that too expensive or too cheap.

Or perhaps one of the excellent Irish cats from Safehaven Marine, but I expect the price would be more than £200,000.

A LOT of choice at that price. (age dependent of course)
Not too sure about that, there seems to be quite a lot of cheapish boats at under £30K then they seem to get quite thin on the ground untill you get to £100K

I did buy a long wheelhouse Lochin 33 a few years ago at a little over £40K but there's not many of them around. The standard legnth wheelhouse on the Sporst Fisherman varient, in my opinion, offers too little accommodation for a private (non commercial) application.

Mitchell 31s could be worth looking at and could probably be fitted with legs to take the ground.
