which marina ???

When will the road into torquay be complete, last time I went it took 45 mins from the roundabout to the Center, I agree torquay is nice and can be pretty sheltered.

Scheduled for completion this coming December 2015, and on target at the moment!

It's going to be pretty rubbish this summer with the added holiday traffic, but there are ways around it......if you know where to look.

thank you for all the advice and help - I think I am now sold on Torquay - will update here as and when and hopefully all good when I eventually get a boat.

thanks again
Jon

Good choice Jon, feel free to drop me a PM when you're next down this way if you fancy a chat over a beer.

There are a few more on this forum based in Torquay - NoviceRod is one
I live very close to Torquay as well - but prefer to do my boating in the Med.
When we moved to Torquay, I promised myself that I would have a boat in Torquay - in deed, JW spent 3 months there before she headed south.
But since moving, I haven't had the urge to have a second boat - maybe a RIB sometime - I dunno

Another vote for Torquay from me. Although I must admit that I may well be tempted to follow in Hurricanes footsteps and try the Med before too long, and too much more poor weather! We live in Bath, so not so far as for you Jon, its about a 21/4 hour drive, but every time we travel down its far enough to feel like its a proper mini holiday. We have just returned from a whistle-stop 2 week tour of the Solent. We had a great time but realised how much we like the South Devon and Cornish coast when we returned. It depends what you are after, but we love the lively holiday atmosphere in Torquay and Brixham, the short walk into town, the harbourside cafes and bars, every conceivable type of restaurant, live music in the evenings, and the relative escape to the tranquility of the marina when you need to. The icing on the cake for us is the proximity to Dartmouth, and Salcombe, and not too far away from the River Yealm, Fowey, Falmouth and The Helford River. Good luck. Rick

A boat in which you can realistically cross the Channel for the weekend will cost a minimum of £4k to berth in an "any state of tide" accessible marina on the South Coast.
As for driving to Torbay it can take 5 hours from Bristol on a bad summer weekend ! Now that would make you kind of itchy !
Maybe the east coast, the Blackwater or the Crouch would be a cheaper more easily reached alternative. What about cross country to North Wales, Menai or Conway ?

I travel Bristol to TQ, and this can be true eg if you leave @ 10am on Saturday, on weekend kids break up; it could take 5 hours. My tactic is to travel down off peak, eg Late Thursday or Friday. MDL staff are there 24/7, so we stop on the way for a meal, then crash on the boat ready for full day the next morning.
