Which magazine shall I stop?

Referring only to your question and ignoring the rest of your post in the interests of Sunday propriety, I don't always read them-some remain unopened for months!

I've tried this too as it seemed a less painful way of throwing the magazines out. Now I've got stacks of unsorted articles.

Used to take YM, Practical Goat Owner and Sailing Toady...

YM got far too much like the parables according to Saint Tom Cunliffe, so I kicked that one into touch. Sailing Toady was OK...will be interesting to see how the departure of John Goode affects things...perhaps also getting rid of Saint Peter of Poland would help there! PBO...well, never really took Miss Snorebury as a serious player in the yottie mag market, but IMHO I reckon she is doing a pretty fair job!

Still reckon it is good policy to subscribe to an IPC title at SBS in September...Free bottle of Gin or other such giveaway if you take a 1 year subscription...cancel at end of the year, they invariably have some such offer as take the next 3 issues for £1 or some such giveaway taking you to the December, then sign up again with another suitable freebie at LIBS in January!

Rosa, don't encourage him!

........................................

I second that as his posts might be tainted seeing as where and when he uses the laptop /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Looks like lots of us have the sane dilemma! My problem is not the cost, but the space all the old issues take up (just can't throw them away). I've looked at the digital option now available, but was a little disappointed with what I saw (not that easy to read). My current strategy is to buy each month whatever looks the most interesting...but then I have to remember to go to WHS!! Can't win really...

Didn`t realise a thousand peeps would look at the question,Thanks for your comments I will start by stopping PBO on the basis I haven`t done one job that they have written about.RGH

And with these forums we do not have to wait for someone to write an article to show us how to do something or how to save a few squid - we simply ask and like-minded folk help out with an answer, powerful or what?

The only trouble is ... the mags are the biz and the forums are paid for by that biz ... no mags = no money = no forums.

Doubt it - IPC needs these forums more than we do.
Feel that they "feed" on this forum for content for the mags.
A subject sparks a lot of interest/debate on here - hey presto - couple of months down the line: article in one of the mags.

Right...but these YBW forums have a life of their own now, and I'm sure would be hosted by someone else. However, I find something of some interest every month in ST, PBO and YM...but the paper is overwhelming my meagre storage. I think digital is the answer...just needs a bit more refinement.

I used to get PBO ... as the others I found were for more upmarket boats ... Sadly I found that was changing and even PBO tended to forget about its roots in DIY / small boats etc. I kept all the mags bound in volumes .... often flicked through referring to old articles ... "How to fabricate an avon outboard bracket .... " "How to rig for heavy weather ...... " "Centaur across the Atlantic ...... " .... etc.

Unfortunately ex wife stored them in shed and mice made homes in the volumes !

IMHO the older mags were better - but thats because I have less than 30ft boat and over 30yr old.

I stopped the mags when I left UK on a more permanent basis as there wasn't an electronic version then. Considering the amount of advertising in them now ... I would be reluctant to start a subscription ... I do buy when back in UK though ... to feed my curiosity about all things boaty.

I am skeptical about topics creating mag articles ... as many threads are generated by those who read and comment on articles from mags ... so maybe there is a balance.

I can certainly say that I am disapointed in IPC take up ... I am not only one that has contacted editorial staff for IPC to cover the Baltic Sprint Cup due over here end of July ... a large fleet of racing and classic boats all racing across baltic ... stopping for Town Shows and displays ... a gala event for each port visited. IPC hasn't even replied to any offer from organisers or myself ... so that also tells me IPC will choose itself what is article or not ...

Hope you read above Keith !!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It does happen. During that forum spat with the self appointed Health & Safety spokesman who had some tangential association with the RNLI, I said yachtsmen here needed more sophisticated safety information such as "top 10 reasons for SeaStart callouts". Hey presto about 9 months later such an article appeared in print.

Note to the editor, I am still waiting for the group test of gale force cloths pegs to appear.
