I'm thinking about buying a cheap Landie but can't decide which one - Defender, Disco, Freelander or Range Rover. I don't reckon that I'll need to tow anything but I need more space than my current 2-seater. I definitely want a diesel. What about mileage? Any suggestions?

Surely the disco has got to have the worst reliablity record ever..............
Only got to look at the prices being asked for old ones.
Your bunch of local travelling folk do not "liberate" many discos from their proper owners only Shoguns. What better recommendation could you ask for.
Much much better off with any Nipponmobile Shogun Isuzu anything in fact.

i had two old Range Rovers then two discoveries TDI and then TD5 , At work we have a Defender TD5 and I now have a Toyota Amazon, all from new over a 20 year period.

I am not impressed with LR build quality, corrosion , resale value or reliability but very impressed with Toyota in my family we now have a Land cruiser Amazon diesel an excellent large car, a Rav 4 diesel an excellent small 4X4 and my kids have two Yarris excellent small cars what more can i say .

but that trip from Eel Pie to the local Asda in no laughing matter.I believe that several high curbs have to be overcome on the way.

Agree with old git, Discovery was worst vehicle I've ever had the misfortune to own, SWMBO has owned 2 Freelanders one ok other very suspect. In contrast Shogun 3.5 , superb vehicle highly recommended except for petrol consumption when driven hard, diesel is the way to go.

you turning into Hugh Fearley-Watsit or what. You'll be renaming your boat 'Bain Marie' next and moving to a cottage in Dorset.

Nope but quite likely moving to Linslade or indeed anywhere out of the grip of the London Boroughs.

Last car was a Jeep Cherokee Sport. Not cheap on fuel, even the 2.5 diesel is quite thirsty, but appeared bomproof and was comfortable with any kind of load and a bit crash bang without. Rear door entry is small and not a lot of rear legroom. Otherwise comfortable to drive and had the turning circle of a black cab. Decent lugage space and good offroad capability/ Grand Cherokee more Range Rover like for o a lot less dosh. Not suggesting you buy one, just expanding on incoming info.

Depends how cheap is cheap. I had the mixed fortune to work at LR for a couple of years and ran Disco's as company cars. Nice vehicles but appalling build quality. Wouldn't buy anything pre-Ford so 99. Freeloader's not much better. On the other hand Defenders have questionable built quality as part of their appeal. Shoguns are overpriced but reliable. I ran an Isuzu Trooper for 3 years and it never faltered. Go jap and dont look back! (Although I run a jeep now!)

Re: Which Non-Land Rover?

All right, lets forget Landies. My last car was a Freelander and I loved it until some scrote nicked it. I also ran a Trooper in the eighties and a Jeep in Canada and thought they were great too. So which other make is the best? I probably wont spend over £6k.

I have grown to hate these things, but let's have a poll.

Jeep simply for the cash you want to spend, you can get a decent one. A bit agricultural, but nicer to look at than a defender IMHO.
Hahaha, Cayenne, Land Cruiser for that dosh...../forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Which Non-Land Rover?

Have had a LC Colorado TD (same model and colour as Sandra but mine's permenant 4x4 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif) from new and am struggling to let it go 'cos it's so damm usefull (about 4 times a year!)
It's basically over engineered for road use over here...and the Amazon even more so.

Your always going to get mixed views about any vehicle. I've had a Range Rover for a few years and its done nothing but perform the tasks I've asked of it faultlessly. A friend of mine runs a Disco diesel which hes had for a good few years. Again its been reliable and done everything its been asked with no major breakdowns or niggly problems.

FWIW if I was getting another LR I'd look for a well spec'd Disco V8 and then have one of the gas conversions fitted. Bro runs a Rangey as a daily driver running LPG. Fuel costs for the week are akin to the old Escort he used to run.

Motors from the jap stables? If it were me I'd look at Izuzu or Toyota. Tooper or Landcruiser. The others such as Mitsubishi seem gimmicky. Chap I know has a grey imported Shugun, or Pajero as they're called. The altimeter is very useful!!

So this impending move to the sticks. Is it all tweed breeks and flat caps for you from now on. I hear a black lab is derigor if you get the 4wd for bumbling around Beds.

Well now , speaking from experience of Landies Ive owned 5 "proper" LRs and learnt to drive on a 1948 series 1 and to me no other vehicle has the same "soul" the three I owned from from new have been very reliable , and the last one now coming up to three yrs old pulls a tipper trailer of laden weight 3.5 tonnes very regulary and completely laughs at towing the boat at 1.7 tonnes. Having ridden in Shoguns the Defender is every bit as smooth a ride. If not LR I would go for Jeep ,

Re: Which Non-Land Rover?

I like Jeeps so I've no problem there. The thing is I'm reluctant to get rid of my current car. I would probably loose £2-3k on it but I've had 4 years trouble free driving from it and I'm wondering whether old 4x4's could be as reliable. The SL has done 177,000 miles and keeps going on and on but I'm thinking of getting some bodywork done on it and getting a 4x4 as a runabout.
