Once again im looking for things to fit out another boat.Ive been using a Garmin 72 up to now and was very pleased with it i just wonder what other GPS hand helds in the same sort of price range there are now?

Perhaps one with a complete set of nav cards for the med for under £200??? Or one with a bigger screen but no cards???

And what about depth are there any new forward looking depts out?? Lower prices??

Cant really answer your questions but its good to see you back on the forums again. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Cheers Graham

Thanks im only hear for the week then im off line again,im landlocked for the moment and the thrills wearing off,ill be glad to get back to the med crowds troubles and all.

The baltics a dismal place some like the solitude rain cold but i dident really get into it very gray VERY expensive truculent people Polands great a gem in a desert but even there there the communist past has left its mark but unlike the miserable Sweds or the bored Danes the Poles try there best

Im hopeing with the boat show being on there will be someone thats seen a super GPS or depth as id like to buy both though my old GPS will do if theres nothing to justify replaceing it

Ill have to try posting again in the morning

So pleased to hear that you are alive and well, some of us were worried about you. I for one would love to hear a roundup of what you have been doing recently.
Allan
PS I use an old Garmin GPS48 which is worth about £10.

I considered buying a Garmin 60 but found them a bit posh. However the Garmin 70s series although ancient by technological standarts aren't much cheaper. Wich btw seems unacceptable to me. Finally bought two brand new (unused that is) Magellan 315 for less than half the price that a modern one would have cost me. Why bother anyway? Yeoman does the rest of the job so map feature etc aren't a priority for me.

If you want mapping why not put it on the laptop - just buy the charts and a basic chart reader comes free, posh one cost a lot less than a H/H GPS and you get a much bigger screen ( hate the idea of peering through a tiny window at the chart)

Big welcome back to the frohum.

When does the next book come out ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

last time i looked "e charts" cost a fortune and had all sorts of spy wear to prevent them being shared passed on or borrowed, i wondered if buy now with almost everyone equiped with "e charts" there might be something PAD size with charts for planning?

Up to now im using paper charts updated its easy in the med you mention the place you want to go to and someone will say "have you got a chart" "no" "I have, look hear, you have to be careful hear then theres a great anchorage ---" Then they ask *you haven't got a chart? Borrow these!

With chart readers were not at the point where compatibility would allow that and then its unlikely and impractical to lend someone your chart SD card which has all your charts for say the med on it and unlike a paper chart that can be copied Echarts cant

So perhaps a seaclear with charts that works when loaded may have become available at the boat show this year?

As for my "summer" cruise this year is was very boreing other than getting wet feeling cold and very alone on a sea with dreadful motion nothing much happened:

I was boarded by some Russians or rather one Russian as there wasent room for more ive no idea why as he couldent speak a word of any known language though they had a lot to say, they kept prodding the screen of my GPS and pointing i wasent sure if i was to follow them to Russia but in the end i ended up in Estonia which nearer.

I was useing charts i phographed then printed gluing together 4 A4 phocopies i should have used a laser printed as the normal printer prints use ink that runs when damp,I dident think it a good idea to show them my DIY charts so i showed them a plastic folio of charts and pointed overboard, they understood my local charts had gone overboard, with that they gave me compass bearings and distence and waited untill id set my GPS then left me but were never far away

Ive always wanted to visit Russia

Good to see you are back- best wishes.

Have you considered a Yeoman Sport Plotter, driven by a simple GPS handheld? This would give you standard paper charts for ease of planning and viewing a large area and both can be driven by the boat's 12v battery. Not a waterproof setup though, so only to be used below deck.

I find that my Yeoman purchased on e-bay for about £130 plus a Garmin 12 (£65 from the same source),for gps location, serves me well and can be easily taken off the boat for planning at home or for using on another boat

Welcome back Steve! We were worried about you. Can't wait to hear all about your trials and tribulations when you get set up again.
My experience with forward looking sonar was not good - in the sort of depth that was of concern it only looked a short distance ahead. A recent test in one of the mags indicates that this is still the case. And they don't see floating objects like containers. Can't see the point.
Anyway, good to hear you're safe and sound.

Quite similar to what I use: Yeoman compact with Magellan 315 paid less than 90 quid for both.
During my summer cruise in the Indian Ocean I had tried laptop navigation using Stentec's WinGPS 4 Navigator which I also ran on my PDA. Very good Admiralty charts, competitive pricing. I found the pda screen next to useless however since it's just way too small. My Laptop worked very well (though our second one gave up the ghost) but still found the 15.4" TFT too small for getting the big picture. Plus massive drain on the batteries. Hence the move to Yeoman using proper charts again. Of course it helps that I've got a full size chart table on Tin Hau!

Ive been trying to buy a yeoman since the 80s,in the beginning they were to expensive (for my budget)From time to time ive found affordable secondhand ones but as the last one i called & emailed then i was out of touch for a few weeks seems the chap got back as i left dident hear from me again so sold it!

Otherwise ive found an expensive one with a "waggel" contact in a second hand shop or an not very old one with an asking price of £300, after that i gave up.

Im sure its possiable to use a GPS mouse to do the same thing? Ive been told you can but have never met anyone with a mouse onboard to show me how,nor the the shops demonstrate it well

Im still a user of full size paper charts. As ive said many times i would like to have charts on a laptop that i could have it on the cockpit table in the evening or cafe table during the day to plan, to look at the anchorages & distences just get an overall view

Thats my main reason.Given that todays maps can be zoomed it would be really useful in finding new anchorages or village keys i may have missed by not havening a detailed chart or perhaps not even having the chart.Ive spent hours or at least as long as i can until the shop assistant wonders why ive looked through so many charts without buying.

Its becoming harder to copy Yachting mags pilots and charts by quietly photographing them one chandler almost throw me out when he found me copying a chart with a portable hand scanner

Are you surprised??!!?

Welcome back. Good to hear from you again. We have all missed you.

I replaced a hand held a year ago and wanted a basic machine that provided what I wanted:

12v DC
Interface with either USB or Serial
External aerial capability.

The most cost effective answer was the Garmin GPS76. I am not a fan of the handhelds with maps, and this is available as a basic model, as well as a more advanced one with maps.

I wondered about the 76 ive got the 72 and hear in the compass mag its £40 more(for the 76) Dose it do the same things as the 72 plus a card reader?

Ill only be hear until next Monday then we have to go back to get the house ready for Christmas (and warm)Im trying to look for another boat but Stella always seems to have things that we must do such as cutting wood for the heating or digging the garden fixing the kitchen theres never any time to go look at boats?

Im begining to think next year will find me gardening rather than stern to a key with good glass of cool wine on the cockpit table?

I trust you had a good summer and are enjoying winter, normaly this time of the year its visiting other boats and being social!

The standard 76 without the maps, is very similar to the 72, but has more channels so is faster and more accurate. The card reader version is for the Maps.

Lots has happened to me since we last conversed. In summary, I am in Norway working, and have split from the ball and chain

Ill have another look ill have to find a moment when compass isnt busy and theres someone that knows how to demonstrate them,i went twice last spring and there was only what seemed to be an old family running the shop, and knew nothing about any equipment!

Sorry to hear of changes,i always thought woman were better when you dident see them sooo often and then with other friends?I really get the impression they need a man for support more than we do a woman but then wwoman have other attributes? such as seeing something ive been looking for and walked past at least twice! The female radar spots it at once, though thats not always a blessing!!

I wish France or Italy would discover oil or gas in the med then there would be a Norwegen oil rig in the med then you could bring your boat there. now that would be fun a bar bar Q under the oil or gas rig on days off in the sun!
