A sailing chum asked me about hand-held plotters. I know nothing - except that chart choice seems to be the criteria rather than the hardware. Anyone got recommendations?
I bought a Raymarine RC400 because I wanted to use the same Navionics CF charts I have in our fixed E80. Someone will tell me I'm totally stupid for doing this but there you go, that was my criteria.
I like the Navionics charts and think the E80 is a fantastic piece of kit, so wanted to "optimise my chart investment" when away from the big boat for whatever reason. I like the large screen and chunky buttons on the RC400, more a nautical piece of kit than some of the smaller units which are aimed at the walker/cyclist etc
Selecting a chart plotter based on cartography investment, and knowing its good quality for your area of boating, sounds like a good idea to me.
Re the plotter choice the RC400 or the Geonav Gypsy 4, which is the same product under a different brand, would be my choice also. Although I posted about Navionics announcement of charts for the apple iphone which, if your friend has one it, could be an interesting alternative.
