Which hand held or fixed VHF?

Would have to say most of the reviews and feed back of sub £100 fixed are not good.
Worth spending a bit more money and getting something that is getting good feed back.
Also if you spend a bit more you will get better features, audio and screen.
You can even pick up sets with three year warranty.

As VHF is a safety of life service IMHO its better to choose wisely and spend a bit more cash.

There is some great kit out there, there is also some not so great kit.

LIBS is always a good place to buy.
If you can't get there get your local dealer to match the price.
If it is a well known brand the local dealer will be able to match the deals even if they are not at the show.

In this months PBO there is a review that covers the mid priced radio's and their second station mic's.

There are some good hand held radio's now for around the £100 mark.
Look for the warranty, battery and inc extra's.
AA cell back and 12V lead thrown in adds good value.

Hope that helps a little.

Best regards

What will you use it for?

It's for a friend, I am buying it as a Christmas present.
I have a Raymarine fixed and a Simrad handeld which work ok. My HT50 has some nice features but I'm not spending nearly £300 on him, already spent £££££ on family and friends and I am tired of telling him to buy one so taking the bull by the horns. I know I'm a cheapskate, there seem to be some smart new handheld sets for around £50-£100 which I think could be the best route to take.
What do you think?

... a Christmas present...

Ah yes the HT50 would make a lovely prezzy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On a more budget slant, the Silva S12 waterproof is a nice piece of kit (complete with mains and 12v chargers) and a snip at 80 squids.

I have the same model and I agree it is very good.

Agree totally, that’s what all my friends will be getting for Christmas - standard horizon HX270 superb little handheld. They are very solidly built and come with a long manufacturers warranty against water ingress.

I've had a Silva handheld for over ten years now. I keep expecting the battery to die but it just keeps on going. Great budget bit of kit. Next time I might go upmarket to an ICOM but it probably won't match the value for money that I've got from the Silva.
