i am considering going through the red sea and would like to take a decent semiautomatic weapon to blow pirates to pieces. I used to think that takiong guns was silly, but if they turn up shooting i may as well have something on board to go down fighting and possibly get away. Any recommendations, and is there some RYA or other training course i might attend?

Seriously

Are there not a few legal problems to overcome by carrying guns around the ocean?
When we worked in North Yemen water's in the late 80's we had patrol boats around us at all times.

Used to have a mate who could lay his hands on various Eastern bloc stuff - Migs, soviet tanks etc. Knew another guy who was a member of the "froth blowers" as well he spent a bit of time in a dodger African jail as well. Think he's "serving" abroad at the moment. You should be able to get the odd AK if you go via Libya! You could of course lengthen Diana 11's bathing platform to take a helicopter gunship - give you a greater space for ironing as well /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As to RYA courses - I'll go check. Bear with me!

No, nothing in any of my note books. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Can I suggest that you need :

1. Something with sufficient punch to disable or sink a 40 foot steel hulled boat at a distance before it gets within effective small calibre fire. The ideal would be a quick firing cannon but you would probably have to reinforce the foredeck and also it would take quite a lot of time to assemble unless you kept it permanently mounted in which case you might have some problems with the authorities when in national waters. A number of cheap and cheerful RPG's would do the trick - or a surplus bazooka.
2. A short range killer/frightener. Yes, the Kalashnikov AK47 would do the trick - virtually indestructible, dirt cheap, and very easy to use.

If you have any problem acquiring these or any other similar items send me a pm. Next day delivery guaranteed all major credit cards accepted, (not Amex).

Re: RPG?

rocket propelled granade would most definately spoil the pirates day

a 50 calibre browning would sort most pirates out, discourage the bravest

9mm 92 beretta with a couple of clips better than a cowboy gun with only six rounds

an AK47 with folding stock .Ongolo in the chain locker with a couple of phosphorus (?)grenades in a blooper M10 backed up by a striker with some solids pig rounds

no more pirates left WWF will start a breeding programme /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Just remembered the size of Diana 11.
With a little bit of fabrication could you not fit some kind of torpedo type device and perhaps a cleverly disguised rocket launcher on the stern. As jkay says white phos should bring tears to their eyes!!!!

Glad to see you did not throw your toys out of the cot because I suggested top gun.

If you must

The Americans actually make and sell a stainless steel semiautomatic for yacht use. I've seen them on American owned boats in SE Asia.

Personally, I reckon a b.....y good way to have your life made miserable at every port and end up getting killed anyway.

A friend very nearly murdered a few Filipino fishermen who were trying to sell them some fish.

No, no, no, no, no you're all looking at this from the wrong angle. What tcm needs isn't a gun: shooting pirates yourself is much too labour intensive. May I recommend replacing some of the staff on Diana II with ex paras. What you may lose in the presentation of the cuisine you will definitely gain in firepower.

When I was heading off to Georgia a few years ago during the civil war, I joked to a friend that I should take a bazooka. "Oh, borrow mine" he said, pulling a loaded 66mm off the top of his wardrobe...
