Thinking of heading to scotland next season so will need a good power sourc. Cant see the point of solar or wind as a reliable versatile source when a portable gen like a honda available. But which model is the most practical. The eu 1000 or eu 2000. Anyone with either care to comment? TY

Go for the 2kW. All the people that we spoke to who had the 1KW wished that they had got the 2KW. So we went ahead and got the 2KW.

It will run quietly and naturally produce all the leccy you need.

Or go for the Kipor at ½ the price, or less - and more powerful - 1.6kw for the honda against 2.6kw for the Kipor. Of course you may have too much money burning a hole in your pocket and fancy paying £500 + beer tokens or more just for the honda name......

get the big one.

the devil is in start up current for any number of devices especially those with motors

for example I had a "85 watt" requirement for an oil boiler - so a 850W 2 stroke genny would do - not a chance! the start-up current was 2000W.

my water maker is 1.5KW but needs 3.5KW to start it. hence we have a 4KVA genny.

hi this may sound silly but you run these out side on the deck i take it ,and fill it with diesel plug it in and go

the small Honda suitcases are petrol. Diesel gennies start at around 4KvA, and are a magnitude noisy than petrol.

would you say its a good must have appliance to have on your boat and which model is the quiestest model on the market think thats all

Please dont Hijack my thread Dilly. |My question is about the pros and cons of a Honda eu1000 vs Honda eu2000 for coastal mcruising in NW Scotland

We have the 1kw, we went for that simply due to weight and size, didn't fancy hauling the big one up on deck. It is also quieter than the 2kw which is a big issue for me. I only really use it for battery charging and via our Victron charger we can put about 60A in to the batteries; that's enough for us. We can combine the inverter and generator output to generate a maximum of 2.6kw if we need extra "oomph". I am also aware that 2 x 1kw Honda genny's can be linked together to provide 2kw. If I wanted more power I might do this as it has the size/weight advantages as well as generator redundancy.

Honda make the best suitcase Genny's IMO, but they cost. 1kw is small and light - easy to store and the quietest. 2kw a bit bulkier and heaver, a little noiser too - but gives more output if that is what you need. There are a few Honda copies out there, one of which is the Kipor. It sells for about half the Honda price, sometimes less. It is a bit noisier, but not too bad. We have a Kipor 2KW. Its now 3 years old and never missed a beat. It gets used 3-4 times a season for few hours each go and for that, its fine. If I were buying to run one constantly, I would probaly invest in the genuine Honda. But for occasional use, the Kipor seems fine.

We had a Honda 20i now sold and replaced with solar, but appreciate were you are going. The Honda 1.6kw would run the 40AH Sterling battery charger on the quiet setting but add the 1kw calorfier water heater made the Honda ramp up with more noise. We could also run a 700w oil filled radiator at the same time, just. I could lift the 20i out of the cockpit locker with one hand thanks to the big handle on top.

We sat it in the cockpit most of the time depending on wind direction and on top of a door mat as the rubber feet mark the non slip, this also made it quieter down below when we left it running through the night for heating. Good for about 7 hours on a tank of fuel.

Sold the Honda 4 years later to a market trader for nearly as much as we paid for it. He was impressed with the low hours and good condition. They are shipped dry with a bottle of oil which needs adding before it will start, they also have a tilt switch so won't start if they are at an angle. No oil filter so change the oil regularly.

How do you do this - is it just a question of wiring both outputs into one socket ?

Er...no. I think that would result in an almighty bang! I don't understand the technicalities too well but essentially our Victron combi charger/inverter has a "power boost" facility. I can set the maximum amount of power that it will draw from the shore power and then it will invert the balance of the required power from the 12v battery bank up to limit of the inverter. So I can take 4A (@240v) from the Honda genny and then take 1,600W (limit of the inverter) from the batteries. Via a fancy "switch" it blends and puts both supplies "in phase" and then delivers the combined output on the 240v circuit. Clever stuff. Someone with better knowledge than me will be long to explain shortly no doubt.

it's worth having a read of the Honda Inverter generator system.

I have the Honda 2000 inverter and a Honda 1000 'normal' genny. The difference is noticeable in that the inverter, though bigger, makes less noise, and the engine note scarcely changes when load comes on.

Well worth keeping an eye on local advertising sources for a bargain. I got my 2000i for just on half the normal full price, and it was less than a year old.

All the Honda inverter series can be coupled togethher 'in phase' automatically, so that you can piggy back a 2 and a 1 KvA to make a 3 if you need it.
