Firstly apologies for posting on several forums but it is relevant across our different areas of interest. I am researching a method of making folio charts easier to use in open boats and boats with limited chart tables. You will appreciate that confidentiality means that I cannot explain my idea cause it would just get pinched if its any good!! Anyway I wonder if you could help me by letting me know... What type of craft you have, Do you use folio charts, if so which ones (Admiralty, Imray etc) How do you keep them dry (in an open boat) How well have they withstood time and use etc. Do you have a chart table? How easy is it to change charts and plot fixes on the move. Any other information that you think useful and relevant to your choice and use of charts... My idea was born out of problems that i have handling charts on various craft without a decent chart table and particularly open boats so I will let you know if it goes foreward as some of you may have the same problems. Thanks very much, Iain

I know it's heresy to say it, but this is just another one of the reasons for doing away with paper charts and going with electronic. But if you insist on paper, I have seen waterproof "chart covers" - unfortunately they are generally smaller than the charts, so require some origami to work. Even when you have a huge chart table, one great problem is that charts are all different sizes and sometimes oriented top/bottom or left/right. I wonder, now that HSOs are producing more charts as Print On Demand (POD), if it is possible to have them reduced onto a more manageably-sized page? Just a thought.

Iain, I use the Admiralty folios, of which I have several now. They come in nice, plastic wallets. I load a couple or so of the wallets up with two charts in each, back to back. I then plot on the plastic with a fine, washable, fibre tip pen. This keeps the charts clean. You have to be careful the chart doesn't slip within the wallet. I guess in an open boat you'd need to use a waterproof pen and clean up later with whatever removes the ink - maybe meths?

Thanks for the replies everybody, bobgosling.. i haven't invented a chart cover just a change in the way charts are presented...keep the info coming, cheers Iain

Started with Stanfords, quickly migrated to Admiralty because the detail is better. Put them in order in the Yeoman, then pull out the last one and put it away. Easy peasy.
