I'm retiring and going to live in Malta. A few months later, I'll hopefully take delivery of my new boat. My only problem is where to register. SSR says you have to be UK resident - I won't be and won't want to be.

Any thoughts most welcome - especially on the pros and cons of different registrations!

The Chinese flag is much under-used in the area and should give you a certain air of distinction in the marina. Personally I would not go with the 'Stars and Stripes' but then I am not looking to create extra excitement in my life.

You don't have to be UK resident for Part 1 registration - if you can gather the necessary proof of ownership etc.

You can surely rustle up a UK address for SSR.
Hard to beat to avoid a lot of the Burocratic(sp?) Crap attached to a lot of the other options IMHO.

Why do you ask? if you are so determined not to be British, as the previous replies suggest, take up any meaningless flag for your own "convenenience"

I think the responses you got were possibly because you were perceived to be undiplomatic about the British flag, as Ashanta pointed out?

Regarding the value of this forum, might I suggest you trawl through the Liveaboard forum instead, where there is likely to be more relevant information? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Many thanks for the suggestion Damo. I'll do that. Regarding being anti-british - with 20 years in the Forces hardly! I just want to retire abroad - that's not anti British and I won't be handing in my passport till the island sinks! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A lot of countries don't like people living long-term with a foreign-registered boat. I would find out about that before taking a decision.
