I'm replacing my broken fixed VHF with a DSC one - I don't want to send much - My budget won't stretch to a command mic one! It seems there are a few about for under £140'ish. Cobra, Midland Neptune, etc - anyone got any recommendations? / bad experiences etc.
Cheers

[/ QUOTE ]Oh yes it will! Check out the Standard Horizon GX1500E, available complete with full function second station command mic and free UK delivery from JG Technologies for £135.

Is that the one advertised as "Standard Horizon Quest GX1500 complete with the optional RAM command microphone for full remote and DSC calling. Special Offer!! £135" - the 'E' isn't stated - but I guess its the same?

Please prove me wrong, but I think that the word Quest in the name indicates that it is the US model without the CE mark, and therefore not legal to use in the EU. That said it does have all the international channels. I checked that when I looked in to buying one in the USA.

The CE marked model is still a very good buy at £129.95 from Marine Super Store. You can always add the command mike later.

That's the one. If you're concerned it might not be the CE version, just email them and ask. Standard Horizon kit is good quality. I'd much rather have it in preference to Cobra, Midland, etc.

[/ QUOTE ]The only flaw in that argument is that Marine Super Store also call it "Quest"! (And it's 30% dearer than JG Tech).

I think you get what you pay for. Standard Horizon have a good reputation, I have one of their handheld VHFs and it is very good. The other makes I have not tried and I would at least want to see what the magazine testers thought of them before purchase. The fixed VHF is after all an important piece of safety kit.
As for the Standard Horizon Fixed VHF models the GX 1500E is definitely EU specification, on the other hand a US supplier offered me a Quest GX1500 (without the E) which was US specification without the CE mark, though it was switchable between US channels and International channels.

As I said, "Please prove me wrong...." because I would also like to get the VHF and command mike from JG Technologies or anywhere else for £135.

In their magazine advert in December YM Marine Super Store do not include the word Quest, but I note they have now confused the issue by putting it into their webpage here

Standard Horizon on its UK website here does not use the Quest name, which appears on the Standard Horizon.com website which appears to be US based.
I think that the E suffix denotes the CE marked model, which may indeed be identical apart from name and CE marking. Unfortunately the directives regarding CE marking are used by international companies to allow them to charge more in Europe than they do in the USA.

Message from JG Technologies "Don't worry our are UK sourced we don't grey import. Its the GX1500E we sell. You are dealing with a professional company . Regards JG" sounds good.
