Talk to Volvo owners and then talk to Yanmar owners, If I printed what i think of VOLVO spares, i could be taken to court,

Aslo talk to Tolley Engines in Cheshire, they build a very nice 18 HP engine based on a BRITISH BUILT PERKINS. Spares for the Perkins will be a lot cheaper

Good luck in your deliberations

Hi, There are a number of engines around, Beta, Volvo, Perkins, Yanmar, Lombardini... I think 15 ~ 20 hp is spot on. There are strong arguments for not fitting too much power that I won't go into here!

Volvo spares are horrifically expensive, although availability and quality is not bad.
One of the big charterers went through a program of replacing Volvos with Yanmars because the cost of ownership was much better.

If you are in a club or marina ask owners what their experience is not only of their engines but the quality of the local service.

I haven't had much to do with Betas, Perkins or Lombardinis but I do understand that the Perkins represent excellent value at the moment.

Good luck. KCA

I have just had a 14hp Nanni fitted to my Macwester 26, replacing an old Stuart Turner. Although i have not yet had much chance to use the engine (only a couple of hours so far!) I am delighted with how smooth and quiet the Nanni is. Price was not unreasonable.

Someone above mentioned Lombardini engines. Since Simpson lawrence is the UK agent for Lombardini, and they have just gone bust I am not sure how readily available spares/back up will be.

Yanmar seem to have a good reputation but only available in 10 or 20 hp nothing in between. Pesonally I wanted more than 10hp and 20 hp woud not fit! Also the 10hp is raw water cooled only and personally I prefer fresh water running round my engine block. Volvo engines also only 10hp or 20hp.

What sort of engine are you removing? Where are you based? I may be able to recommend an engineer.

Regards,

David Walkerdine

PBO ran a series by Per Cumberlidge, which dealt in selecting and installing a small diesel. I think it was turned into a book.
There have been quite a few posts on this subject. My personal recommendation, and I suspect that of many others others, is a Yanmar. My 1GM10 may be a trifle small, but the 2 cylinder model should suit.
I do not know where you are but Yanmar spare and engineeering expertise are universally available. Spares are moderately priced. The engines have few common faults and mine ran for over 13 years before it required a major overhaul.

I'd agree on the advice regarding the Yanmar. My last 3 boats had Yanmar 1GM or 2GM engines and were trouble free.
You are probably best guided by what was in the boat previously - you would not want to spend ages redoing the engine bed etc if poss.
By the way, the 2gm is rated 18 hp not 20

I'd suggest the 2GM20 Yanmar.

It's the only small diesel, originally designed as a marine engine, apart from the Volvo.

It has a good power/weight ratio is fairly well designed and you can source many of the consumables at 1/2 the price from Japanese cars.

Be aware, however, that in common with ALL vertical twins, it is impossible to balance throughout the rev range and you will have two sections of the rev-range where you'll get a lot of vibration.

I would at all costs avoid Volvo - IMHO their designs show frequent faults, the spares are unreasonably highly priced and they have a poor power weight ratio.

Have a lok at the Beta 13.5/20 these are exellent engines, spares are cheap and readily available. You will probably find that the Beta engines cost less than Volvo, Lombardi and Yanmar as well.
