I have a single diesel engine but I am planning to change my present 'twin lever 'engine controls to a 'single contol' lever as although the present 'Morse' controls work they are a pain when docking in a tight place as both levers work the opposite way round to each other.
Does anyone have any recommendations to 'prefered makes 'or any 'don't touch them' types.
How hard are they to change over by the average DIY, or is it a job for the proffessionals?
Comments will be appreciated.

Most control levers can be mounted in either of two directions to suit the individual boat layout. You may have already checked yours but can you turn one of yours round? You may need to remove an internal plate and turn the plate over on its spindle before refixing the cable.

You should be able to fit a new unit yourself. The Morse ones come with quite comprehensive instructions although because they are universal fit you need to select the correct internal settings (plate positions, cable mounting points) to fit your engine and gearbox. These settings determine the travel distance for the cables.

One lever is for forward/reverse and the other lever is the throttle, either way it is a pain to have them opposite and I have looked and you can not turn them around.
So single lever control appears to be the anser.

Silly me. Of course whichever way you mount the gear lever it will still move in different directions! I hereby officially withdraw the first part of my post. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It depends on the engine. You may have twin controls because there is too much friction for the single type to overcome. For example my old Yanmar YSE8 was twin. Present boat is Yanmar 1GM10 and is single Morse. I would ask whoever builds the engine.

main reason for single function controls is that they are easier to set up for dual station however most morse controls can be set up to work in either direction

single lever is more intuative
