I've been using Grotomar for quite a few years, it seems to work ok and the diesel looks clean when I take a sample from the bottom of the tank. I've heard its a good idea to use more than one type, to rotate them and not always use the same. Any views on this and if so what do you recommend? Thanks.

There have been numerous 'scientific' tests on the effectiveness of all the main products which you will find with a Google search. I suspect they all work to a point. I had always used Soltron and never had a problem however when I got my new (to me) boat the previous owner had always used Marine 16 so I have carried on with that. There you go @dunedin I got it in there quickly!

I always use Fuel Set but don't know whether it's worked or, I've been lucky so far in never filling with contaminated fuel.

If you are using ANY additive correctly - as long as you are not supplied really bad fuel - you would never actually know if it works or not.

Its like a Rope Cutter .... you only know about it when you DON'T have a Rope Cutter !!

thanks for that, I'll stick with the Grotomar then, its worked so far...

As I said earlier ---- you have no way of knowing it worked or not .... unless you tested fuel before and after treatment. Even then it depends how long fuel remains in tank before its consumed - its a matter that many forget. If you are a motor boater with constant fuel change in tanks ... you should be less likely to suffer problems than the sailboat who uses engine much less and fuel sits long period in tank.

My boat is a Motor Sailer ... 42hp Perkins with a 75ltr tank. Consumption at 4.5kts about 1.8 - 1.9lt/hr ...... lets say 2lt ... River use - I run engine near continuous, but at sea about 50% of the time ... its a MS - not a race boat. In a season of 6mths - I would assume 2 tanks average volume ..... and I use an additive with each top up ... but a good double dose at start of season - as my tank usually has 1/4 to 1/2 volume over winter .....
What do I use ? Enzyme based. Because of my commercial work ... I will not name it .... just that its Enzyme based and also breaks down any water content suspended in the fuel.

I use Marine 16. The formula changed apparently a couple of years ago to cope with the increase in the bio-diesel in the fuel.
Thanks to Brexit one now cannot get Marine 16 in Greece and of course it is flammable so I cannot take it out when I fly
I wonder which of the recommendations in this thread are available in Greece or Italy or Croatia????
