Nobody seems to like poor old Fords. By chance I have had 3 Ford diesels.
An Orion a Mondao and a Transit, never a problem.
I am now using an LPG conversion it goes well and my fuel bills are now 60%.
I've got the same engine in my wifes 'M' reg 98,000mile 1.8 TD Mondeo... It is without doubt the slowest car Ive ever driven! Power comes in (and I use the word power advisedly!) at 2500rpm, and ends at 3400rpm., that way you get half way across the road junction b4 you have to change into 2nd. Link that to a really slow when cold gear box and you have a car for all to hate.
It does however start well and does 40 mpg and cruises all day at 90 once it gets there.
Ive rented quite a few Citroen Xantia HPI s in Spain and love them... cheap 2nd hand so I might get one next time.
Over thing about the Mondeo is that although spares are cheap the engine is so inaccessable that maintainance is a nightmare and dont even think about clutches. I should think its even worse on the Escort..
But if Rover had stuck with the gas terbine, instead of buying an obsolete V8, we would all be running marinised gas terbines instead of Volvos in our boats.
I notice few if any aspirational vehicles appearing down there!!!
Treat her and get a BMW320d Tourer, stylish, wicked performance (old ones 137bhp, newer ones 150bhp and mountains of torque), practical (if a little small) for throwing all her shopping or the boaty stuff in the back.
If you can't bring yourselves to buy a Skoda. get a (not quite so aspirational) Leon with the VAG 110hp motor - cracking buy.
Alternativly get a DERV guzzler - 525d or 530d Automatic and blow everyone else off the road, Oh and 30 to the gallon in Auto flavour.
Had a 524i Beamer ...... got shot of it as quick as I could get the bloody thing up to 50mph !!! That means that it was difficult to get shot off ..... no-one wanted it !! and it took ages to get up to speed. Its power band was so narrow that I had to keep changing up and down so often I felt the gearlever was going to come off in my hand .... and this was a Turbo version !!!
I went back to environmentally cruel gasolines jobs again .... I may survey millions of tons of diesel - but I have no intention of driving another oil thumper for many a year !!!
My old company had inspectors in UK and it was always said that join xxxxx company and lose your neighbours - they gave all inspectors in UK diesel Escorts .... 2.00 in the morning starting one of those is not recc'd to keep your neighbours happy !!!

Bilge Keelers get up further ! I only came - cos they said there was FREE Guinness !
Dunno if I should bite again on this but what the heck!
When Rover brought the BOP design is wasn't obsolete it was actually a fairly state of the art engine then and bear in mind been in production for 40 years and countless redesigns.
Gas turbines were originally being developed by Rover at the beginning of the technology, Sir Frank Whittle and all that. They gave the details to Rolls Royce in exchange for some of RR developments. PS The Goverment at the time decided to "exchange" info on Gas Turbines with the US, they gave us nothing, we gave them the huge lead we had!
Gas turbines are no more viable now than then, the consumption and other issues are too great. Maybe for bigger boats but not our sizes.
They now have a top range version using the Octavia and is more like an Audi A6 than anything like a Skoda ..... saw one other day, guy let me look at it. I was impressed and I drive a S70 Volvo - which I am hooked on - so if I think to save some money on next purchase I might just consider the Skoda ......

Glad someone else thinks the same of Diesels as I do!
Had a ride in a BMW 320d in Belguim a little while ago, I'd always been told "best of the lot" god it was awful, noisy and rattly. If the fuel wasn't so cheap in europe would they drive so many?
But didn't most manufacturers license in the Peugeot Diesel as they didn't have competitive ones themselves .... that includes Ford, Volvo, VW-Audi etc. etc.
It was only later and some only recently that actually put their own diesels in and those based loosely on the Peugeot .....

Have had 4, 3 series saloons, one old 3 series tourer and 2 coupes in the past, great vehicle but dated in appearance now apart from the coupe.
Looking at late model/low mileage the value vehicles are the Citroen and Ford, Seat come in there as wel, and VW only enter the frame when you get an import.
She has now declared she is not keen on the Picasso looks, so will end up trying the others.
Suspect that with things slowing down in car sales there will be some reasonable deals soon.
motor I had ... was a 24V Carlton Diamond ..... pure gasoline job with the performance that curled the wifes knickers !!!!
The Disco I have always liked ..... but Oh dear if you get a bad one - boy its bad and I had one !
The Beamer .... well read the post earlier, I think the 0-60 was about 19 secs !!!!! and that was a 524 Turbo job !! Never rated Beamers anyway !!!!
My old Cavalier 2.0i was officially rated faster than a 325i BMW .... and I proved that many a time !!
So now I have in Baltics - a S70 Volvo 2.5 ..... very good and excellent on the long journeys I do, I also have an old classic .... 3.0i Senator - interesting drive in the winters out here !!! Still beats the pants of most around it !! And finally in UK a little Suzuki Vitara .... which was a straight swap for the Disco .... and I have never regretted it ... the little beast does all I ask and never lets me down.......
Diesels - what for ? Most modern gas jobs are getting nearly as good mpg and you don't look a prat with a spoiler on the back of a car that don't catch the proverbial !!!!!

is the RECIRCULATION switch on my aircon ... whenever I get behind a Diesel - I switch onto recirc - so I don't get lung fulls of black smoke that most oil burners seem to chuck out defying all Greenpeace actions !!!!
