I think the rule 500 pumps are great. They are probably a bit more expensive than most but I've always found them good.

I already have a manual, so I'm planning on replacing the dead submersible pump with some sort of electrical pump with float switch. The debate is whether to go for a submersible pump - such as one of the large rule units with seperate float switch or to go for a none submersible remote unit with the pipe leading into the bilge sump.

Problem with the submersible units is that due to the deep bilge sump that I have which is essentially a box into the keel, it is difficult to get the wiring connections up to a level above the floor - if that makes sense? so I have recurring problems with wiring - plus in an emergency the sump would fill, overflow to the floor level and kill my connections .....

hope that makes sense, and thanks for the replies so far.

Having just done mine I know exactly what you mean. Why manufacturers of bilge pumps and float switches don't provide wire several metres long is beyond me - well, it isn't it's cost saving obviously.

Extend the cable with marine quality tinned wire - West Marine do a 3 core wire they call 'bilge wire'. I bought separate wires and clipped them together with nylon ties. Join the wires with marine crimped heat shrink connectors.

If you are tight for space in the bilge look up Rules Rule-Mate series. They come in 3 sizes and have a built in float switch.

If you can fit something a little larger in base area of the bilge then a good system is to have a submersible pump and float switch arrangement bolted into a basket / box of perforated stainless steel. You will then be able to lift and drop the whole thing into your bilge.

I don't know how good the supplies are in Dubai these days but you can always get something fabricated relatively cheaply there.

Unfortunately I am offline for a few days from a few hours from now but I could give you a few names to contact in Dubai if you're stuck. Drop me a PM and I'll see it on Friday if you need any more help.

Cheers - Dave
