Next summer I intend to splash out and charter a 50 ft plus boat to take Mrs Yoda and the children (18, 16, 16, 15) round some of the islands. It must have a large owners cabin for Mrs Y and enough room for all the children. The Bavaria 49 or 50 seem to fit the bill as may a Belize 43 (cat). Space and creature comforts onboard are very important. Anybody got any experience of this end of the market, other ideas or particular companies to avoid or go to otherwise I'll have to trust to what I can google. Thanks for any ideas.

Ocean Star 51.2
A belter won't be beaten excellent build and sailed like a dream in a force 9 for us.

I first happened upon one some 5 years ago while helping an incoming skipper moor in one of the islands, we had a Janeau 43 at the time and after being invited on board his Ocean Star it was just a completely different league.

2 years ago We hired one from MG Yachts at Kalamaki.. (Athens) it was the best price I could get and was fabulous, we had it for 2 weeks, I didn’t want to hand it back, will be back for more again.

Have fun…. Peter

The Greek yacht charter market is very compeitive, so you should have no difficulty going with any of the larger firms. Use someone like Kiriakoulis as a yardstick for comparisons. Smaller firms are less likely to carry 50ft yachts, and their service levels are less predictable; some much better than average; some much worse . . .

Lavrion is a very convenient charter base for the Cyclades, but this is a windier area, so you'll have to check the sense of adventure of your crew if this is your plan. My web site has plenty of info comparing the various Greek Cruise areas - may help you plan itineraries too.

It's not always easy to find quay space for catamarans in the more crowded areas.

Haven't sailed the Bav 50, can't help there, but with that much space, 6 is a doddle.

Many thanks, I shall read more from your web site when I have more time. Strangely my wife prefers it if we are sailing with a decent bit of wind, as do the children. That is not a problem. I do however need to go upto the 50ft range to get the required internal volume that Mrs Y demands. me and the children are used to a very small 30 ft boat, which Mrs Y won't go on!

I agree with the Ocean Star choice, though you have to know that it's difficult to find a charter boat with an owner's cabin.
