hi all

i have searched the forum regards this and people are saying it depends where you are berthed

i am new to this boating lark but before i put my boat in the water i want to re antifoul her PROPERLY

the boat is going to be moored in weymouth harbour so are there any owners on here from that area or can anyone recommend a good paint to use on the south coast

cheers shawn

I used to use interspeed ultra - found that very good, tried cruiser uno, that was a bit rubbish. If you don't know what the current coating is use an isolating primer (primercon or similar) otherwise the new stuff may fall off (as I have just discovered).

It's amazing, I was the other way around. Used inter speed and it was ok, switched to cruiser UNO after being best in test in the MBM and have found it much better!!

I guess the best thing to do it ask around at your marina and see what the locals use...... But expect to get loads of different answers!!

Do it properly? Only one answer IMO - CopperCoat. Saves fuel, lasts ages.

I used to get barnicles when I used interspeed but dont get them at all with cruiser uno. Plus I find my speed stays constant through out the year, rather than tailing off a little??

It really is a dark art, with a splash of faith too!!

what is the cost of this on a 37ft boat compared to normal antifoul and can it be done yourself or do you have to get a contractor to do it

you can roll it on yourself but you must follow the instructions carefully, it's more of a fiddle than conventional antifoul, but it lasts up 20 years in the UK so it's worth the effort. You must do 4 coats in a day, if you can't do this roll half the boat - you can do half the boat but NOT half the coats.

you must also get all the old stuff off first - for that a specialist contractor is probably the best way to go. But I am biased. This will cost you £430-500 plus vat at our prices depending on what type of system you choose.

c £700+ vat for the paint. Can be more exact if you supply beam, draught and length on waterline.

If we spray the coppercoat on for you it would cost you c£2k plus vat for the lot including removing the old stuff, prep, materials, etc.

bit more than i want to spend this year got to pay for the boat, boat transport, 12 months marina charges insurance etc etc it all adds up but i will give it serious consideration for next year

i will see how bad it is when lifted out the water as it was done last oct so should last till the spring so if i dont re apply now then i may get the copper coat done in the spring instead of doing anything now if that makes sense

cheers shawn
