Where's this?

Re: Where\'s this?

The wee bay on the northern Garvellach is certainly small, but not as dramatic as the one in DaveS's picture. Here's us in it last summer, looking from more or less in front of the bothy.

THat's all very well, I know you lot can all do it. I'm trying to find out how.

When I press the "Instant Mark-up: URL" I get two prompts, asking first for the http address of my link, which I entered, then I get asked for the web page I want. I presumed this to be the same and put in the same http: etc. again and the second bit came out scrambled as you can see. Do I really need to respond to both these prompts? If not, which do I use, if yes what goes where? Help!

If you want the picture to appear in your post, as opposed to a link to it, don't use the URL mark up just use the Image one instead.

Re: Where\'s this?

Thanks Patrick. Looks great. Even more of a "settled weather" anchorage than Naoimh then? What's the holding like? Naoimh's got good holding, firm sand as I recall, in a northerly, but might be bit tricky in a change of wind direction.

Re: Where\'s this?

Its not quite as open as my picture makes it appear - the southern (right hand in the picture) side comes out far enough to provide a little shelter. But even so, its only really much use when sheltered by the body of the Garvellachs themselves, so from west of SW through to north of NE. Bit weedy on the bottom, but biggest problem is its actually rather deep for its size - about 7m from memory - which gave us worries about swinging room. Probably unjustified but the shore always seems closer than it is from onboard! There are iron rings on the rocks which we took a shore line to as well, which dealt with the problem quite well.

Re: Where\'s this?

In this photo the line (actually a tape) to shore does look like a chain, doesn't it? In fact you can just see the chain, in shadow, going vertically down (which is the only sort of weather that I'd happily be in there!)

Re: Where\'s this?

No, not there.

Final clues: it's an island who's population was evacuated at about the same time as St. Kilda's. This picture shows the abandoned houses. (And the hill in the background is quite well known.)

Any ideas?

Re: Wild Guess

OK, I'll assume there are no more takers. I admit it was a bit obscure. It's Eilean nan Ron, off the Kyle of Tongue on the North coast. A fascinating place, but a right tight anchorage - I wouldn't fancy it overnight. The steps from the landing point are remarkably steep; not so noticeable going up, but coming down they're quite intimidating. There's an interesting tank, connected to the sea, behind the breakwater: shellfish "keep" pool? swimming pool? The hill in the last view, incidentally is Ben Hope, the most northerly Munro.

Re: Wild Guess

I'd have got there eventually, once I'd worked my way round Cape Wrath on the household 1989 OS Motoring Map of Great Britain /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Great pic, good quiz - first for a long time that no-one's got.

Re: Wild Guess

It was a really interesting place, but a bummer of an anchorage.

We spent the night in Talmine which has a great pub / restaurant, but it's a long walk from the harbour. With a SW wind the bay further in might be shorter - and probably just as sheltered.

Re: Where\'s this?

Well I think a year is sufficient thinking time!

It's Eilean nan Ron, NE of Tongue. It was evacuated in the 1930s about the same time as St. Kilda. As you can see, it also has a crescent of deserted houses. The hill in the centre background is Ben Hope.

Jings Dave, you've just LakeSailored yourself!

Errm, I think.

Er, I think I have! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'm not sure what happened there. While searching for something else I found what looked like a thread which I had started then abandoned, so I thought it would be tidy to finish it off. And of course there's actually a whole load more which I'd obviously forgotten about... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thinking about it a bit more, I think that the search function only shows one page of a long thread, and you have to click on "show all" to see the rest - which I obviously didn't. Oh well, to coin a phrase, a ken noo!
