Had a fabulous sail from Poole to Weymouth on Sat and back on Sun - hardly a boat to be seen! Wind was 15-25kn, beat both ways, aching muscles today!

The Solent was pretty busy. Say what you like about this summer but the sailing conditions were excellent both days. Like you we went West on Saturday so we had a beat both ways. F5-6 on Saturday and F4-5 on Sunday and only one 10-minute thunderstorm all weekend. Even a bit of evening sunshine in Newtown Creek on Saturday. What more could you want?

We went the other way to Lymington on Friday pm then back on Sunday, and downwind both ways with just the genoa. Easy lazy sailing and just lightish rain for an hour or so Sunday afternoon.

I was crewing for a friend in a club race ex Porthmadog on Saturday - pretty lumpy conditions and 3 of the 5 boats due to start turned back. We decided to carry on and go for a sail - SW 12 - 18 kts of wind - bright sunshine.

We had a fantastic sail over towards Abersoch and Pwllheli but only counted another 4 boats out all day.

The irony is that the race will probably be reschelud for a day when there is 3 kts of wind and everyone sits in the cockpit blowing at the mainsail!

This is not a dig at weather forecasters, more a gesture of sympathy with their difficulties. We listened to/saw about five weather forecasts for the weekend, each of which differed in detail and even substance. Most predicted heavy showers or rain for Saturday and the apocalypse for Sunday.

We actually had wall to wall sunshine and excellent winds on Saturday and rain up to 0900 on Sunday followed by a cloudy but dry day and gentle breezes.

No more than seven miles away, though, Saturday was washed out by continual heavy rain and Sunday was drizzly and horrid.

Whilst up around Exeter Saturday was beautiful, saw one of the most spectacular sunsets everfollowed by rain about 20 minutes later!

Sunday woke to a deluge which abated around mid day and then followed by drizzle on and off throughout the pm.

Bloody weather, was hoping to spend 2 weeks on the boat as of next w/e. Now looking at the forecast which seems to show unsettled weather for the foreseeable future we're about to book a last minute holiday abroad.

There is a new water taxi service operating in Lymington, same people as run the Yarmouth one but it only runs weekends Fri-Sun, £1/person each way. We stay out on the buoys or the pontoon mid river and even though we had the dinghy on deck took the new taxi to save scrabbling for a dinghy parking place. We like Lymington on a Saturday for the market, plus last Saturday we bought a superb (cooked) lobster that was even affordable, just, but especially as we hadn't paid out any berth fees over the last 3 weekends with the crap weather.

Went to Lymington the w/e previous. I wish we had gone there again this w/e. Did Cowes for a short (5hr) stay £10 then down to Yarmouth buoy for Sat night £15~. Lymington Quay £13~ overnight and IMO a much nicer place.

Long weekend Thursday - Sunday. Much use of anchor, all FREE! Good sailing, and visit to Brownsea Island, and stayed dry too - until last 5 minutes when heavens opened and mighty hailstorm left us SOAKED!

Yes, things do improve heading West from the Solent, Lots of places to anchor around Poole and Swanage. Unfortunately if you are based at Poole you occasionally want to go somewhere different, and as I said previously, I was going to go to Weymouth, but the Forecast indicated that it would be best to go East on Sat and West on Sun. We did manage to get Fri night at anchor off Studland and a few hours anchored there on Sun. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes that is the problem of living and sailing from Poole - the first thing we do is to sail off somewhere else that is nowhere near as nice for the weekend! Mind you we spent years exploring all the corners of the harbour in smaller boats years back, these days however our draft is restrictive for most of the favourite spots from then.
