...I have decided to sign up to a taught evening class... not too far from where I work in Portsmouth, starting in Jan... I shall then enjoy the summer, making use of my new theory skills and then do the practical course in the autumn.

Sounds like a good plan Phil.

When I started out, after a couple of years' crewing, I did DS Theory in the Autumn with a local guy one-to-one, then the practical with a Solent school boat in the Winter. That Spring I bought my boat and started sailing her, and the following Autumn/Winter I did YM theory with the same guy. Never got round to actually taking the Coastal or YM practical (that's another story) but the theory stuff was thorough and has mostly stuck.

I'm not quite sure. I guess so? I'm doing CC as well - so two weeks in total.

Then do yourself a huge favour and buy these two excellent and brilliantly-illustrated RYA books and ingest them thoroughly before you go off on your course:
