Where to source hex head thumb wheel.

What do you actually need to do? For instance, does the new part need to be removable? Could you substitute the entire bolt with a new one?

It would probably be possible to hand-make a copy of that design using a drill, a small file, and a lot of elbow-grease, but it would need those coordination skills and would be best avoided if another solution can be found.

It's for a brake spinner on a wheel. I have the bolt with the required 50mm of thread stripped and hoped to make one up to feel smug at avoiding Lewmar's £65 charge for the part.
My tool kit comprises hammer and molegrips so if I can't get a pre-fab part I'll bite the bullet at the chandlers.

I can think of several ways of making a substitute part, but they all involve more tools than molegrips and a hammer :)

Might be best just to bite Lewmar's bullet if that really is your level - it will look nicer too.

One of these companies might have something for the job

Thanks Cet1, componentforce have a female knob (oxymoron?) similar to Babayaga's suggestion so I may look at using that with some s/s studding.

Something like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/bak-rak-s...rs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2654
It's 8mm but there are plenty on Ebay in different sizes
Another possibility - found a nice pair of polished s/s but at £25 may be better buying Lewmar part.

I can make you one.

Or if you want a go: To get the thumb bit you drill holes on a PCD then turn the diameter so you get half the holes left.
This is part of my problem - I don't know what a PCD is!

Not sure what pressure/torque you need to apply to the part but couldn't you mould a head from Polymorph?
Never seen this stuff - what a sheltered DIY life I've led, looks very promising and good fun even if it doesn't work.

Thanks to all for v. useful suggestions - plenty to go on.

Went for one of these in the end , which I think looks rather nice. Knowing what search terms to use made a big difference.
Ordered some polymorph as well, which looks like useful stuff.
Thanks again for all replies.

It's useful that you can buy these for metric bolts. I needed a pair for imperial bolts, and moulded them in a plasticine impression of the broken bits, in a plastic can around the bolt head with resin and filler, then filed it to a more precise shape.
