Hi guys,

A quick question if I may............

I have just been contacted by our German mate Sascha who has just arrived on at the Hamble after a Atlantic circuit on his Westerly Longbow. He has been advised to sell his boat in the UK as she may have a better market here. But he has arrived at Decons or somewhere around there and they don't appear very interested. The boat is probably a bit tired after her trip and is probably not looking her best.
So can I ask for help with a suitable location for our friend to sell / store the boat in the area please. I have suggested he takes around onto the east coast, but he has deadlines to get home for and doesn't have the time.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Darren

I'm surprised Deacons aren't interested, they have a 2 month storage and lift in/out offer running at the moment for boats entered in their used boatshow. Provided the boats insured and priced relative to its condition, I would have thought they'd be more than happy to put it on thir brokerage. I just put my Vancouver with them and they were very helpful.

More seriously.

This yacht should fit the lower end of Deacons market sector so something must be wrong for them to show lack of interest. I guess documentations problems, does it predate the magic date when VAT is assumed to be paid?

Your friend has arrived at an optimum time for his proposed sale because the used boat shows are about to start in the Solent along with free bus services to ship people from the main Southampton show to the secondhand shows. If Deacons are not interested try Roger Moon at Hamble Point he is a very engaging chap who will atleast offer best advice even if the vessel is below the low end of his market range.

People seem to fall over themselves to buy overpriced Centaurs so surely this will sell to someone seeing a bargain of a super sized Centaur.

Unlikely to sell quickly, even if it is low price. Brokers may not be interested in a tired old cheap boat, so may be worth looking at a lower cost winter storage that is still accessible for people to see the boat. Davis's Boatyard in Poole could be good as relatively cheap storage and broker on site dealing mostly in lower end boats.

Much sense in this though I think the "just crossed the Atlantic" subheading improves chances of a sale. Presumably the yacht went through a period of enhancement prior to the circuit and some buyers will look beyond the low budget traveler look (if indeed this is the problem).

How long has the Longbow been outside UE waters? It may be necessary to imort the vessel and either pay the VAT or sell it as VAT unpaid.
Your friend should check his status against HMRC requirements.

Hi Guys
Apparently Decons will not take any vessels on the books under £20k at the moment. The boat has been out of Europe for 9 months at the most so she should be fine with the vat and tax. And yes she has had a fair bit of cash spent on her including new headlining, chainplates and some nice toys. Will suggest the place in Poole as I'm thinking you guys are correct with the time to sell her, could be a while. I personally think e-bay is the way forward.

Thanks again

Certainly around the Solent the market is pretty well flooded with older sub 20k boats at the moment, with an absence of buyers at the start of the season let alone now nearing the end of the season. Deacons are really the only largish broker/boatyard in the area who cater for that market and if they aren't taking anymore on because they aren't selling, there probably isn't much chance of getting a sale through another broker. I would find somewhere cheap to store her and put her on at an attractive price with Boatshed and put her on eBay classifieds. There are two Longbows on the WOA site at the moment at £12500 & £12950 and others on the internet for about £10000. I would guess selling prices would be significantly lower.
